Elin Gustavsson Kristen Foster CO150.403 12-16-13 The Explanation of the Rhetorical Choices a) Religion will always be something that people talk about. Religion is not a rule that we just can take away or ague about which opposing view is correct. It is more than that, religion is something that people live for and take energy to live their life. We all are different and find our own way to handle situations in life, and religion can be one. Our inner hand that helps us in our live can be anything (Salmansohn). The human life and our decisions are a huge part of what the world is about, so what can be more exigent than that? The decisions we make will affect the future. We have to feel comfortable with what we do and where we find our inner strength. People should not say to you that your belief is silly and stupid, you believe in what you want and no one should make you feel stupid. The reason why I am writing this is because I want people to accept each other and tolerate every belief that we humans have. Of course you can have an opinion about others beliefs, but you still have to have tolerance and behave in an acceptable way.

b) My purpose of my public argument is to make people think of how they actually behave when they are publishing mean billboards in New Yorks Time Square (Marrapodi). I want them to understand that this billboard war between religious- and the non-religious people are more stupid than thinking that someones beliefs are silly. If they really think about it, they are breaking a rule in their religion- the Golden Rule. The Golden Rule exists in every religion in some way (Sprizler). If someone posts a billboard about that religion is stupid, then the

religious people will pay back with something worse. Then I wonder; what happened to: Treat others as you want to be treated. This is why I choose this purpose. I want people to tolerate each other; make them understand that it is just an embarrassing behavior.

c) My claim is Religion is necessary in some peoples life. Many use religion for purpose and hope throughout their life. It gives them a sense direction and it helps them handle difficult situations in life (Holst, Larsson 3). From personal experience I know that this is true, and I also know that religion does not have to be a source of purpose for everyone. I am one that does not need religion but people I know have a religious way of living. On my billboard I want people to understand that we have to tolerate people beliefs and differences. My evidence to support this is based on the Golden Rule, Treat others as you want to be treated. d) My audience is not only the people that see the billboard when they are walking by, but more importantly the people who like to point their finger at the other side. I want the individuals that think the other side is silly to be more understanding and realize that it does not matter what a person believes as long as they have purpose in their life. I chose this audience because I want people to get along and not treat people badly. The billboard war really is unnecessary because it is just opinions of each side that will continue going back and forth. They only think of their belief and they do not care about what others may believe in. They are confident in expressing their opinion by displaying on a public billboard. To reach out to my audience I used specific word choice on my public argument. I decided to not use the definition of the Golden Rule, because simply stating makes people stop and think what it really means to them.

e) I would publish my argument on a billboard in New Yorks Time Square. The reason why I would do that is because right now there is a billboard war between creationists verses atheists (Marrapodi). Time Square is the number one most-visited tourist attraction in the world (Appleton 2). If I publish my argument in the middle of the war, the people who look at my billboard and the people who made their opinion public will get my point.

f) I chose to present my information on a billboard. A billboard is a public advertisement that promotes different ideas and opinions. When you are making a billboard you have to think about grabbing the audience attention by using limited words, be creative and show verses just telling (Suggett). I used Microsoft Power Point to create my billboard. I chose a simple background so it will be easier to focus on the text. I have two different fonts in two different colors to help the audience to read through the text. I strategically placed my words to guide the reader through my billboard. The size of my words show what I want the audience to remember after they have seen my billboard.

g) A limitation of my argument is the visibility issue; my billboard will be maybe one of hundred different billboards that are published in New York. It can be difficult to reach out to the people who are walking by, however, I think it will attract the members of the billboard wars because they are already involved in it and they are keeping their eyes on it. Another limitation about a billboard in New York Times Square would be not getting any direct feedback. My billboard will be out there in the public in New York, and I will not really know if it is reaching out to people unless the war ends or if an opposing billboard is created to respond to mine.
