LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE: (REFER TO INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES TO DEVELOP LESSON PLANS HANDOUT)

Lesson Title: Are all humans alike? Long-term planning: Lesson within the Unit Sequence (choose one) __Engage _X_Explore ___Explanation __Elaborate __Evaluation Date & Day of Unit Sequence Date: ___________ Day #___________

I.

Standards and Common Core:

CT State Standards: Include State Standards, Expected Performances (content only) 10.4 In sexually reproducing organisms, each offspring contains a mix of characteristics inherited from both parents. D.38 Deduce the probable mode of inheritance of traits from pedigree diagrams showing phenotypes. D INQ. 1 Identify questions that can be answered through scientific investigation. D INQ. 4 Use appropriate techniques to make observations and gather data. D. INQ 9 Articulate conclusions and explanations based on research data, and assess results based on the design of the investigation. Next Generation Science Standards: (for now, only include scientific and engineering practices) HS- LS3 Heredity: Inheritance and Variation of Traits

CCSS for Math and ELA: (identify the standards that relate to lesson).

II.

Learning Goal(s)/Objective(s): Include procedural and/or declarative goal(s). To measure student achievement, use Blooms Taxonomy or a modified version of Blooms Taxonomy

Students will be use inquiry to indentify different physical genetic traits and analyze data to determine which traits are common and which are not to explain why humans are unique. III. Lesson Instruction: Include timings for each phase. Use the 5E Learning Cycle for short-term planning. Use the Engage for the Initiation and Evaluate for closure. Embed SCI & ENG Practices to greatest extent possible. Initiation (Engage): Cite how you will engage prior IV. Daily Formative V. Differentiating knowledge. Assessments: Instruction: 5 minutes Introduce activity with following scenario: An alien from outer space teleports into the class. Upon seeing Power point the class, the alien concludes that all humans look alike. It is your job as a class to assist the alien in differentiating humans from each other. Walk around observing Have students write down a list of questions that students answers. Graphic organizer would help the alien learn more about what humans look like. Lesson Development (Explore, Explain, Elaborate): IV. Daily Formative V. Differentiating Cite how you will build upon prior knowledge and Assessments: Instruction: build each concept(s). 15 minutes Have students get into groups of 4. Have students fill out their personal survey and then have volunteer tally the groups information on the board. Walk around offering help Using smart board

Have students copy down the class results onto their surveys. Have students graph the data using the graph provided. Traits should be separated by bar graph by YES answers and NO answers. Closure (Evaluate): Cite how you will measure, with evidence, if the objectives were met. Reflection: IV. Daily Formative Assessments: V. Differentiating Instruction:

Last 5-10 minutes Observe answers. Have students answer the data analysis and reflection questions. VI. Lab Safety: Refer to the strategies you outlined in your Lab Safety Manual. N/A VII. Teaching Resources and Materials (e.g. technology, lab supplies, etc.) Smart board Worksheet
