Lesson: Respect/Manners Grade: 3rd Time: 30 minutes Materials: -The Thingamajig book of manners -A paper plate with the

letter R written on it -A tube of toothpaste Procedure: -Tell the class you want to do a science experiment. Have them guess what the letter R might stand for. Tell them it stands for respect. Talk about why respect is so important. Ask a volunteer to come help with the science experiment. In order to show respect we are going to freshen up our words and to represent that we are going to cover the R with toothpaste. As you are doing the experiment, read all of the directions out loud. Say that you forgot a step and you need the volunteer to put all of the toothpaste back into the tube. When they are unable to do so, talk about how some things are hard to take back. Respect and manners are that way. Once we have hurt someones feelings or made a bad impression, it is hard to repair the damage. Point out how when the toothpaste is on the plate it covers R and is as if the respect has disappeared. -Read The Thingamajig book of manners -Discuss the book. -Give students situations where it may be hard to be respectful. How can they still be respectful? -List on the board ways they can be respectful to their classmates. List on the board ways they can be respectful to their teachers and other school workers.
