ITE 360 Multicultural Education Community Assignment

This assignment is worth 10 points (out of 100 points) that you can do anytime during the semester: community field trip assignment. I do need to approve of the community event as its appropriateness for you to attend. Community Assignment - Due anytime up until last day of class 5/7/14 - 10 pts. Attend a local Hawaiian, Asian, Pacific community event of a cultural other than your own and write a two-page report on your experience. For instance, if you are of Japanese descent and wanted to have the Obon Festival that you attend each year with your family, count for this assignment, no can do. You would need to select another culture groups festival to attend. There will be many events held on the different islands and it is your choice of what event you will attend. You will need to get instructor's approval of the community event as to the appropriateness of fulfilling this assignment before you attend by emailing me and letting me know what you want to attend and why. Format the following questions must be answered and pictures are a plus! Name the event you attended, state the date and place, why you chose to attend this specific event and who you went with or if you attended alone. Summarize your experience, sharing what observations you made as to who was in attendance, (i.e. ages, gender, etc), what happened, how did families interact, how did you know this was a cultural event, and how might an event like you attended connect to the school you might teach in. Add any other comments you would like to share. Besides the one to two page report, a few pictures are a real plus.

Rubric for Assessment Does Not Meet 0-4 pts Did not attend or did not receive approval for community event. Not applicable choice for multicultural event. Acceptable 5-8 pts. Attended appropriate cultural event and had a well written report. Conclusions were drawn as to application for integrating community into our teaching practices. Outstanding 9-10 pts. Meaningful selection of cultural event. Writing demonstrates application of integrating cultural values, traditions, and practices for relevant learning in the school or curriculum. Insightful connections are exemplified.
