Megan Short 1010 Group Project January 3, 1014 To begin to figure out the parabolic pattern of the airplane

I had to write my 3 systems to begin the equation. I started out with these 3 equations:

After I had made these equations I then had to solve for a, b, and c. Solving 3 systems of equations is easiest to condense them down into 2 equations and then solve after that. I used the first two equations and multiplied the first equation by a negative one so that I could cancel out the cs and then just be left with the as and bs in that equation. I then moved to the third equation and cancelled out the c in that equation by adding it with the first equation, which I had multiplied by a negative one. I then was left with the two equations of I had to multiply the first equation by a 19 ( ) Then I multiplied the second equation by a -9 ( ) After I multiplied 19 and -9 into the system I was left with two new equations of I then could add the equations together and that would get rid of the bs in the equations and then I could solve for a. after I added the equations together and was left with Then all I had to do was divide 68400 by -6840 and then I solved that a=-10, after I knew a=-10 I plugged a back into the equation so I had ( ) I multiplied 396 by -10 and the equation now was I added 3960 to 8370 and then was left with 18b=12330, I then divided 12330 by 18 and b equaled 685. Now that I had a=-10 and b=685 I could solve for c. ( ) ( ) I then multiplied 4 by -10 and 2 by 685 After I added -40 and 1370 together and was left with 1330 All I had to do now was subtract 1330 from 23645 and I had the answer for c Now I had that a=-10, b=685, and c=22315. Using these solutions to the system I could form the quadratic model of the data.

After I had formed this model I solved for x using and I came up with 34.25. I then plugged 34.25 in for x ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) Now that I found the maximum I could find the first two points on the graph of the parabola. ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( )

( ) With those two points I could graph the parabola and see the flight pattern of an airplane. This project did help me to see how you could apply math to the real world because I always complain about how math is never going to help me in the future. I actually enjoyed this because it brought about useful information rather than just doing another equation on a math book page. It was useful to me because it did help change my mind a lot about the use of math in the real world today. I would like to see how many more working careers use math in an every day situation. It also helped to show that just the math I am learning in high school can help me a lot in my life and that I dont have to go into a very high math to find useful every day equations.
