PONDICHERRY: TIMELINE

EARLY PERIOD: important element of roman trade with India. th Early period Beginning of 4 century A.D: part of pallava kingdom

10th century: captured by cholas of thanjavur. 13th century: replaced by pandya kingdom

In 1638 sultan of bijapur began to rule pondicherry.

EUROPEAN PERIOD
1674:setup of French India company. 1693: captured by Dutch. 1699: returned to France by treaty of Ryswick

1793: British took it again amid the wars of French revolution 1814: returned to France 1850: British took control over India, allowed France to retain their rule

In 1954 Pondicherry, Mahe, Yanam, Karaikal & Chandernagar remained part of French India.

SEPERATION FROM FRANCE

1946: French India congress was formed

1948: Municipal elections were held for the first time

1954: transfer of French territories to India was signed.
