letters of a song and repeat words and phrases while singing. Standards: Creating, Performing, and Participating in the arts Materials: Hello by Teresa Jennings (the echo one) Ive Been Working on the Railroad Kye Kye Kule

Differentiation: Children who have speech issues can later lead to self-esteem issues or an unwillingness to participate or engage socially. Singing can provide a rewarding method to address articulation issues. If a student is physically unable to create a sounds, make sure you speak with the speech therapist first before trying anything. However, one simple strategy is to slow the tempo down considerably to give time for the student to make the braintongue connection. Another strategy is repeating difficult words and phrases.

Lesson: Sing and teach the Hello song Drumming Circle Check-In: o Sit in a circle and the students play a steady beat as a group (do along to a recording with a steady beat at first if needed). Go around the circle and everyone (beginning with you) gets to play his or her own solo (as loud, soft, slow, fast, long, short, etc. as he or she wants) while the rest of the group maintains the steady beat. The students take turns and wait until the person before them returns to the steady beat. Introduce Ive been working on the railroad Have children: o Discuss different jobs that people have o Pat a steady beat as you sing the song o Echo-teach the song including the Fee Fi portion of the song. o As the children what letter the words Fee and Fi start with, then write those words on the board. Erase the Fs in both words and ask one of the students to choose his or her favorite letter, then replace that letter with the students favorite creating new words

(i.e. Bee Bi). Sing the song replacing all Fs with Bs (demonstrate entire song first if necessary). Introduce Kye Kye Kule. Learn the song. Have children: Listen to the song, identifying it as an echo song. (One person sings a segment of the song. Then another person or group echoes the same part of the song.) Practice the pronunciation for Kye Kye Kule Echo sing the song Learn the traditional Akan movements to the song Sing the song again. Give volunteers a chance to lead the song. Close: Goodbye Song
