Using Drama with Children

Classroom drama activities Why use Drama? Practical advice on using drama in the classroom

Motivating - Fun - Encourage children to speak. - Can use non-verbal communication. Build confidence - Useful for children who are shy about using English. Cross-curricular content - Children can act out scene from the other subject such as history. Build skills in group dynamic - Have to cooperate to achieve their aims. Language in context - Encourage children to guess the meaning of the language in context.

Familiar to children - Pretend play prepares children for real life situations. - Develop imagination. The pace of the lesson - Drama can add a change of pace or mood to the classroom. Drama is appropriate for childrens different learning style Language personalization - Allow children to add emotion or personality to the text.

Choose the right activity - Teacher should consider: o The learners interest o The learnesr needs o The learners age o The time of the day Start small - Start with easy miming - As the children gain confidence, move on to less controlled activities plays. - To help children realize that they can say things in different ways.

Miming practise 1) Choose story with repeated words. Eg : The BIG Cat in the BIG House 2) Teacher reads the story aloud 3) Select and teach students gestures of the repeated words. E.g : BIG 4) Slowly read the story aloud and ask students to do the appropriate gestures when they hear the repeated words. Miming stories - Students compose their own story. 1) Give sudents list of words. 2) Ask students to compose a story using the words. 3) Students take turns miming their stories while the rest try to guess the whole story. Miming game - use action or gestures to indicate a word and other students guess the word. Transform stories into mini plays 1) Choose simple story for students to understand 2) Create scripts for differents scenes in the story 3) Students practice and prepare costumes and props 4) Pesents the play to parents.
