Ehrman on the Gospel of Thomas

Ehrman on the Gospel of Thomas

Posted by Stephen C. Carlson on June 10, 2005 in Thomas

Thanks to Mark Goodacre, Bart Ehrman on Da Vinci Code (June 10, 2005) for pointing out an interview on Beliefnet with Bart Ehrman discussing The Da Vinci Code (Deborah Caldwell, Unpacking the Code). It has a lot of interesting material about correcting some statements in the novel, but Ehrmans comments on the Gospel of Thomas caught my attention: I think that the Gospel of Thomas was written about 20 years after John; my opinion on this is the majority opinion; almost everybody who studies Thomas thinks of it as later than John with a few notable exceptions, including Elaine Pagels. Shes the main one, but most people think Thomas was written in the early second century. Ehrmans take on the majority opinion is somewhat different from the impression I have garnered from reading the scholarship of the most vocal (generally North American) investigators of Thomas, but, if Ehrman is right (and he has a better sense of the field than I do), it is a helpful reminder that the majority of scholars are not necessarily the loudest voices. UPDATE (June 21, 2005): Dont miss the comments by Bernard Muller (who has a web page on his own take for Thomas) and Andrew Criddle. Personally, Ive heard so many good things about about April DeConicks approach to Thomas (see: Two Good Articles on the Gospel of Thomas in VC [Mar. 15, 2005]) that Im unwilling to commit myself to any position until I read her book, which is due to come out this fall. (Or does this mean that Im halfway converted to her position already???)
