Reported Speech 2

Reported Speech with wh-words. Discorso indiretto con

wh- words.
When the Reported Speech is introduced by questions with wh-word, the
structure is the following:
Quando il Discorso Indiretto è introdotto da domande con wh-words, la
struttura della frase è la seguente:

Wh-word + S +
affermative/negative verb

“When did you arrive?” He asked me when I arrived/had arrived.

“How is your son?” John asked me how my son was.

Reported Speech with if-whether. Discorso indiretto con if-

whether.
The Reported Speech questions not introduced with wh-word will be introduced
with if-whether:
Nel Discorso Indiretto le domande non introdotte con wh-words, saranno
introdotte da if-whether:

If/whether + S +
affermative/negative verb

“Do you study Chinese?” He asked me if I studied Chinese.

“Did you read the book I gave you?” John asked me if I had read the
book he had given to me.

Reported Speech with order and requests. Discorso

indiretto con ordini e richieste:
When the Report Speech espresses an order or a request the verb tense is the
infinitive and the introductory verbs are to tell and to order for orders, to
ask for requests.
Quando il Discorso Indiretto esprime un ordine o una richiesta il verbo è
all’infinito e i verbi introduttivi sono to tell e to order per gli ordini, to ask
per le richieste.

“Do your homework.” My mother told me to do my homework.

“Please, could I borrow your pen?” He asked me to lend him my pen.
