College Algebra

Prerequisites: Math 30 and Math 40 with grades C, or better or Plane Geometry and Algebra II with a grade of C or better AND the assessment process. Proof of prerequisite is required. Course: CRN: __________________________ Days and Time: __________________________ Classroom: ___________________________ College Algebra (9th Edition) by Sullivan. Pencils, erasers, 3 highlighters, a ruler, 3 ring notebooks, a binder, and a scientific calculator (TI-30XIIS is recommended) are required for the course. Attendance at each class meeting is expected and crucial to your success. A student may be dropped for more than one absence. Tardiness interrupts the whole class. Thus, each time you come late or leave early, 1 point will be deducted. There is no eating or drinking allowed in the classrooms. Bottled water is acceptable. Turn off all cell phones and music players and put them away where I cannot see them before you entered the classroom. 1 point on the first time, 2 points on the second,, etc. will be deducted when I see a cell phone or a music player near you during class. Students who cannot conduct oneself in a respectful manner, she/he may be dropped. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Translate between phrases written in English and equivalent expressions written in mathematical symbols. 2. Solve first and second degree systems of equalities; solve linear, quadratic and rational inequalities, as well as inequalities involving absolute values, and systems of inequalities. 3. Define and graph relations, functions and transformations. 4. Perform basic operations with complex numbers. 5. Graph polynomials, rational functions, conic sections on a rectangular coordinate system. 6. Graph logarithmic and exponential functions. Solve logarithmic and exponential equations. 7. Define and do calculations on sequences and series with emphasis on arithmetic and geometric sequences and series. 8. State and use the binomial theorem. 9. Analyze and solve word problems. Upon completion of this course the student will be able to: 1. Given a polynomial, rational, radical, logarithmic, or exponential equations, or a polynomial or a rational inequality, or an application problem, the student will be able to accurately solve in in a proficient level. 2. Given an equation of a polynomial, rational, radical, or absolute value function, or a conic section, the student will be able to accurately construct the graph of the equation at a proficient level. 3. Given a problem asking for the domain of a function, a system of equations to solve, a problem involving sequences or series, the power of a binomial to expand using the binomial theorem, or a statement to prove suing mathematical induction, the student will be able to accurately solve the problem at a proficient level. The completion of daily homework is critical to your success in this course. 1. Two chapters of homework are due on each day of exam. Each section is worth 2 points and will add up to 108 points. 2. Show all work necessary for each problem. Credit is not given for answers without the work or for copying from the solutions manual. Work each problems in a column, not across the page. 3. Write neat and readable.

4. Include heading denoting name, course number, and class time and days. 5. Start the new section on the new page and label the section and chapter number on the top. 6. Late work is accepted by the next class meeting for half credit.

Exams:

Exam problems will be similar to those in the homework. There will be 5 exams worth 100 points each and a comprehensive final exam worth 160 points. Every exam counts, and no scores are dropped. There are NO MAKE UP EXAMS. However, if you miss an exam due to an illness or accidents, then you may be given the average of the other four midterm scores, provided that you inform the instructor promptly, supply a written verification, and turn in all homework assignment.

Final Exam: Grading:

All students are required to take the final exam at the scheduled time. Bring Scantron form 882-E. Letter grades are determined by dividing the total points you have earned by the total points possible.

90% - A, 692 - 768 points 80% - B, 615 - 691 points 70% - C, 538 - 614 points 60% - D, 460 - 537 points 0%~59.4% - F. 459 or blow points
Withdrawal: If a student wishes to withdraw, it is his/her responsibility to officially drop the course through the Admission Office. Please see the schedule of classes to determine the appropriate dates.

Honesty: Advice:

Each student is expected to abide by the Academic Honesty Policy as stated in the College Catalog. 1. Devote a minimum 3 hours a day doing homework and studying for this class. Do not get behind on homework. 2. Try to understand the material instead of memorizing them. 3. Review everyday. Dont wait until the last minute to study. It is hardly ever efficient and the knowledge will not become yours. 4. Make a study group. 5. Raise your hand and ask questions whenever there is confusion during the lecture. 6. Dont miss any class. One class meeting might cost you the whole semester. I have seen it TOO many times. 7. Dont be late in class nor leave early. You will lose tons of lecture due to tardy and may be lost the rest of lecture not knowing whats going on. 8. Math Learning Resource Center is opened during summer session. There are excellent tutors who will help you with no cost! Please take advantage of this place!!! 9. Dont forget! I am on your side. I am not your enemy.
