The Gold Rush Week 2Day 3 : By the Great Horn Spoon (90 minutes) Objective Students will be able

to identify and describe how people lived during the Gold Rush in California. Standards CCSSSL: Paraphrase portions of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally. CCSSRL: Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., a characters thoughts, words, or actions). CSSCS 4.4: Students explain how CA became an economic and industrial power tracing the transformation of the CA economy as well as the political and social development since the 1850s. 2. Explain how the Gold Rush transformed the economy of CA including the types of products produced and consumed, changes in towns (Sacramento, San Francisco).

ISTE 3: Research and Information Fluency Preparation You will need to have the movie By the Great Horn Spoon readily available and even positioned in the DVD player (or set to play and project on the computer) at the commencement of this lesson. Have the class KWL chart from the first week of the unit available for students to add to on the ReadWriteThink app. Prepare the power point so its ready to present on the teacher computer.

Materials

Guided Instruction Prior to starting the video, it will be important for the teacher to give the students background information and remind them what everyday life was like during the Gold Rush. Use the document camera to project this website: http://www.mylearningcenter.net/hornspoon/index.htm with the class and explore what the movie is about. The instructor could also use this time to fill out more of the KWL chart that was started on the first day of the unit. Students can share out what they have already learned and it can be added to the class chart. The teacher will need to instruct students to watch the movie, By the Great Horn Spoon carefully. Students should also take notes on key points and be ready to share what they have learned at the conclusion of the movie. Independent Activity Students will make an entry in their Gold Rush blog reflecting on the key points of the movie and how it represented the daily life of those who lived during the time of the Gold Rush. Homework For homework this evening, students will complete their blog entry and tell their parents about the movie. Parents will send a signature back with their child that they communicated some main ideas about the movie and how it demonstrated the daily life of those who lived during the Gold Rush.
