Materials Class set of computers Teacher computer attached to document camera Gold Rush Scavenger Hunt worksheet (student and teacher copy attached below) Guided Instruction The beginning of this lesson should begin by reviewing the ways the natural environment was affected by searching and mining for gold during the Gold Rush in California. Utilize pages 240-241 in the Reflections text. Then, describe what a scavenger hunt is. Maybe tell a story about a party where groups of children go house to house in search of a prescribed list of items. They have to fill in the answers or check items off the list once they are found. This step could also serve as an anticipatory set. Then, once students understand what a Scavenger Hunt is, pass out the worksheet and review in detail the expectations of the class assignment. Independent Activity Students will complete an on-line scavenger hunt. Topic will specifically detail ways gold mining effected the natural environment in the area. Students will then need to locate the websites, articles and videos that will be needed to complete the information for the scavenger hunt. Then they will create the answer list in a word doc. Homework For homework this evening, students should complete the classwork and share with an adult what they learned regarding the effects on the land during the Gold Rush because of the mining. ! !
