Bonds

Type of Bond Ionic How do you predict when it will form? When a positively charged ion is compounded with a negatively charged ion (anion + cation) When a two positively charged ions are combined. (cation + cation) When there I one or more ions combined with a hydrogen ion. What holds the bonds together? The electrostatic energy between oppositely charged ions holds the molecules together. The two molecules share electrons providing attraction. The uneven atoms are forced together.

Covalent

Hydrogen

Properties
Property of Water Universal Solvent What causes it? Its polarity. Because it is both positive and negatively charged, it is attracted to many negative and positive molecules. It takes more heat to get the molecules to an excited state because the charge of the hydrogen and oxygen molecules hold water molecules tightly The solid state of ice is less dense than liquid water. Why is it important? When water travels it can take along valuable chemicals, minerals and nutrients. It allows water to maintain a certain heat for a longer period of time.

High Heat Capacity

Ice Floats

High Surface Tension

Capillary Action

The molecules are pulled equally resulting in a balance of the waters resistance making it hard to break the surface Adhesion is stronger than cohesion

When ice freezes over a body of water, this property allows insulation to the below water and doesnt let it fully solidify. Pollen, dust, insects, and other materials will remain on the surface and not combine with water It allows water to move along with things dissolved in it through small places.
