Emerging artists are the established artists of the future.
Established artists are the essence of consecrated tal-
ent. San Diego’s first Beyond the Border International
Contemporary Art Fair is celebration of aptitude paired
with luxury exhibitors, food and wine events, and cu-
rated art installations: four million dollars in artwork and
three thousand attendees September 2-4, 2009 at the
Grand Del Mar Resort.

ENRIQUE CIAPARA
Enrique Ciapara approaches the canvas as if it were a blank
page of poetic text. In his paintings layers of color, schematic
drawing, and script create loosely threaded narratives that employ
allusion and dislocation. Suggestive figures, words, and abstract
scribbles—all displaced from recognizable settings—are painted
or drawn over large fields of thinly applied color. The results are
indebted to the dense pictorial space and gestural expressivity
of Spanish Art Informel painter Antonio Saura (1930-1998), by
way of Luis Moret, the Spanish painter and teacher who held an
informal salon of Tijuana artists for a brief time during the late
1980’s.
In different ways, both Saura and Moret appropriated
Surrealist techniques of automatic drawing and writing and
integrated these practices into their expressionist painting. What
Ciapara does, is overlay these influences with an awareness of
Cy Twombly’s graffiti transgressions. Ciapara, who distrusted
his own significant drawing abilities, was encouraged by Moret
to engage directly with the abstract language of painting. The
Enrique Ciapara results are works that demonstrate a palpable tension between
representational compositions and the dissolution of figuration
into the marks and colors and shapes of complete abstraction. He
bridges the distance between these positions by the elaboration of
intimate, even erotic, personal vocabulary that affirms above all

de un texto poético. En sus pinturas capas de colores, dibujo
esquemático y texto crean narrativas apenas entrelazadas que

DAVID HOCHBAUM
Born in 1971, David Hochbaum was raised
in suburban New City, New York. Feeling
like an outsider, he connected with the en-
ergy and decadence of Manhattan.
Hochbaum turned to art as a form of self-
expression and in 1991 attended the School
of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Mas-
sachusetts. Upon graduation, he returned
to New York where he currently resides
in Manhattan. Hochbaum is known for his
unique photo constructions—paintings built
on photographs and images—which take
on a sculptural quality. He has exhibited in
numerous galleries worldwide, including
McCaig-Welles Gallery, James Anthony
Gallery, Strychnin Gallery, in Berlin and
Daniel Ruanova

Los Angeles artist Jason Shawn Alexander
was born in Iowa and grew up in Tennessee.
He is a self-taught painter whose early
childhood experiences shaped his style and
technique. Alexander’s father exposed him
to the masters from the Renaissance era,
and taught him how to draw and express
himself through art. Influenced by the world
around him, Alexander absorbs everything
he sees, from films, books, art, music,
life, and the news, to people-watching
on street corners and in coffee shops.
His work has been shown in numerous
galleries and is included in the collections
of director Darren Aronofsky, screenwriter Paul Jenkins
Andrew Cosby, and novelist Greg Rucka.

process and esthetics in discards. One thing
he enjoys very much is surprise.
When he goes out gathering, he does not
search for anything in particular. He simply
finds. Sometimes, ideas come to him im-
mediately; other times he saves material for
years until it tells him what to do with it. He
does not consider himself an environmental-
ist; however, he believes that this recycling
process meets a need: to reduce, reuse and
recycle. Nature is wise. It will not be long
before it decides to shake off the pest that

De pequeño, Jaime Ruiz Otis nunca se
imaginó que se dedicaría a hacer arte.
Le gustaba ver el paso del tiempo; lo que

o desarrollando. Busca el contenido,
la carga del proceso de la materia y la
estética del detritus. Algo que disfruta
mucho es la sorpresa.
Cuando sale de recolección, no
busca nada en específico. Simplemente
encuentra. A veces la idea llega al
instante; otras veces guarda el material
durante años hasta que le dicta qué hacer.
No se considera ecologista; sin embargo,
cree que este proceso de reciclaje de
su trabajo cumple con algo necesario:
reducir, reutilizar y reciclar. La naturaleza
es sabia. No tardará en sacudirse la plaga

JOSHUA PETKER
Born and raised in California, Joshua Pet-
ker spent his youth between San Francisco
and Los Angeles. He attended The Ever-
green State College in Olympia, Washing-
ton where he earned a BA in Social Science
and Biblical Archeology. However, it was
writing graffiti at age fourteen that laid the
groundwork for his fine art career. A self-
taught painter, Petker studied Western litera-

ture, art and culture, taking cues from Vin-
cent Van Gogh and Gustav Klimt to Andy
Warhol and Darby Crash. In 2005, Petker’s
work was selected by Los Angeles County
Museum of Art curator Howard Fox to be
included in the museum’s Art Here and Now
program and his paintings have garnered
sold-out exhibitions at numerous galleries
on the West Coast. Petker’s growing list of
collectors include Jennifer Nicholson, Kevin
Smith and Davey Havok, and this past year
he collaborated with designer Jared Gold to
create a collection of exclusive limited-edi-

DANIEL RUANOVA
Daniel Ruanova works with a variety of
materials, often transforming canvases and
found objects into unexpected forms. De-
spite his interest in drawing from popular
culture, Ruanova is keenly aware of the for-
mal concerns in painting and sculpture, and
works to push the traditional boundaries of
these media through his unconventional use
of materials. Sometimes his sculptures take
form of abstracted guns; at other times Ru-
anova builds his three dimensional works
out of an assemblage of colorful plastic guns,
tanks, and toy soldiers. He uses the fictitious
worlds of children’s toys, videogames, and
comic books to create an ironic take on the
current realities of war and violence.
Whether paying a tongue-in-cheek
homage to the power and might of fictional
American superheroes, or producing intense-
ly layered paintings whose abstract compo-
sitions are built from hyper-graphic images
of targets, explosions, gunshot holes, and
camouflage, Ruanova presents a political
commentary that is informed by the direct
relationship of living at the border with the
Unites States, but is global rather than local

Abstract Expressionist painter, Paul Jenkins,
is recognized for the flowing color of his
work which combines with gestural abstrac-
tion in a renewed emphasis on the physical-
ity of paint on primed canvas. Opacity and
transparency alternate to both emanate and
capture light.
Jenkins entered the Art Students League
of New York in 1948 and studied under Ya-
suo Kuniyoshi until 1952. In 1953, he was
pouring paint on canvas to achieve a dense
viscosity of impacted color and achieved
prominence in New York and Europe for
these early abstractions. His first solo exhibi-
tion in New York was in 1956 at the Martha
Jackson Gallery, one of the flagship galleries
at that time with whom he had a long-term
association, followed by his years at Gimpel
Weitzenhoffer Gallery.
Over more than five decades, his paint-
ings have been widely exhibited around the
world. His first American retrospective,
organized by Philippe de Montebello and
Gerald Nordland, was held at the Museum of
Fine Arts, Houston (1971), traveling to the
San Francisco Museum of Art (1972). Major
retrospectives were held at the Palm Springs
Desert Museum; Musée Picasso, Antibes;
Kunstverein, Cologne; Kestner Gesellschaft,
Hanover; Palais des Beaux-Arts, Charleroi.
In 1999, the Hofstra Museum presented a
retrospective of his early paintings from
1954 to 1960. His works are found in pri-
vate collections and international museums
around the world, including the Guggenheim
Museum and the Museum of Modern Art.

Gale Fulton Ross
Artist Gale Fulton Ross was born in Med-
ford, Massachusetts. She has a Bachelors
Degree from Massachusetts College of Art
and a Masters of Fine Art from California
College of Arts and Crafts, Berkeley. She
studied in France, China, Germany and Afri-
ca. Her artwork can be found in many public
and private collections nationally and inter-
nationally. Recently she was commissioned
to do the portrait of Lord Andrew Lloyd
Webber for the Arts and Education School
in London.
Fulton Ross has two touring exhibitions,
Ain’t I A Woman Too?! dedicated to for-
gotten women from all over the world, and
Heaven, Hell and Purgatory based on The
Divine Comedy and Inferno by Dante Aligh-
ieri. In this exhibition Fulton Ross takes her
viewer on the road of personal discovery
leading to artistic enlightenment.
When not painting, Fulton Ross is an
actor with credits in both film and theater.
She is also the founder of The Fulton Ross
Fund for Visual Artists, Inc. The Fund gives
an annual grant of $10,000 to a qualified
career committed artist living in the U.S.
Established in l998, The Fund has also re-
ceived a grant from the Kellogg Founda-
tion and received an award for its exhibition
Encounters, Gazes and Stereotypes focused
on bias and discrimination involving artists
working with at-risk youth and their parents.

FRANCO MÉNDEZ CALVILLO
Searching for the freedom that is afforded by
being in the world of art in December, 1996
Franco Méndez Calvillo decided to abandon
his endoscopy practice for a professional and
fulltime career in visual arts, because he be-
lieves that both medicine and art require full
attention, respect and commitment. Having
started in the fourth decade of his life, when
most artists are learned and settled, forces
him to step it up and avoid distractions. He
favors collages, painting, drawing, sculpting,
and photography as of lately. His topics are
mostly social and political—such as in his
series Clandestine Passports and Rio Grand
Clandestine Bodies—or rather introspective,
such as in his last series, Private Universe.
Méndez Calvillo’s chief interest is his ap-
proach to life and the world around him, try-
ing to understand and explain them to him-
self through art. Art is like a lens to observe
his world and even his own life. Art is the
main medium through which he communi-
cates with other levels of society and those

En busca de la libertad que conlleva
estar inmerso en el mundo del arte,
en diciembre de 1996 Franco Méndez
Calvillo decidió dejar sus 25 años de
carrera como endoscopista y dedicarse
profesionalmente y de tiempo completo a
las artes visuales, por ser de la opinión
de que tanto la medicina como el arte
merecen toda la atención, respeto y
entrega. El haberse iniciado en la cuarta
década de su vida, cuando la mayoría de
los artistas ya están formados, le obliga
a acelerar el paso sin distracciones. Sus
medios más comunes son la pintura,
el dibujo, el collage, la escultura y
últimamente la fotografía; y sus temas
son mayormente político-sociales —como
en la serie Pasaportes Clandestinos o Río
Bravo Cuerpos Clandestinos— o bien más
introspectivos como en su última serie
Universo Privado. El interés principal
de Méndez Calvillo es su perspectiva
respecto a la vida y al mundo que habita,
tratando de entenderlos y explicárselos a
través del arte. El arte es para él como
una lente para ver su mundo e incluso
su vida misma, y es para él el medio
principal a través del cual se comunica a
otros niveles con la sociedad y quienes le
