Byzantine (527-1453):

F-ormal F-lat F-rountal F-loating -Byzantine refers to the eastern christian roman empire. It refers to the territory, history, and culture. -The Byzantine Emperors called their empire Rome and themselves roman. -The last eastern emperor, named Constantine, XI died in 1453. -They where Christians -Their cultural was felt in Europe through out the middle ages -They spoke Greek not Latin -They built architectural wonders in Rome such as monasteries.

Formal: Virgin mother and child enthroned:

-It shows the virgin with the Christ child in her lap -Its in the apps of the church of Hagia Sophia -It replaced one of the Iconoclasts that had been destroyed -The figures look under sized but the seated virgin is more than sixteen feet tall *It shows how they used space and size to make it seem smaller then it really is, Mary seems to be porportioned but if she where to stand she would be very tall.

Floating:

-Christ appears as a white apperishon surrounded by a luminous mandoral -He raises Adam and Eve from their tombs. -John the baptist, kings David, and Solomon are looking on from the left side. -Various martyr saints are on the right side -The figures float in a spirtual atmosphere without material mass or shadow-casting volume *It shows them floating in the clouds with a visual representaion of the spiritual world. It is a good representation of the work at this time.

Frontal: Christ the Savior of Souls: -Notible for the lab issues of finely edged silver foil to frame the painted figure of Christ -Christs modeled head and neck contrast with the schematic linear folds of his garment -The savor holds a bejewled bible in his left hand -He blesses the faithful with his right hand

*It is a good example of style that is typical of Byzantine eclecticism. It shows the whole frontal view of Christ. It is made of silver and wood and is very flat.

Flat: Virgin and Child:

-It depicts Mary as a virgin of compassion -She presses her cheek against her sons as she contemplates his future -The virgin has a long straight nose with a small mouth -They are silhouetted against a gold background *It is a renoun painting that represents the stylised abstraction of centuries of working with conventual images. It is a Historical symbol Byzantiums religious and cultural mission to the Slavic world.

Three angels:

-Its nearly five feet tall -It depicts the three angels who appeared to Abraham -The angels sit around a table with framed halos and sweeping wings -The three angels are nearly identical figures distinguished only by their garment colors -Their demeanors are tranquil -Colors define the angelss by the complimentry hues *Many art historian believe that this work represents the climax of russian painting. It is flat but shows strong patterns, firm lines, and intense contrasting colors.
