Introduc)on
The following are the results of the second annual State of Da6ng in America Report,
which is presented by leading online da6ng communi6es Chris6anMingle.com, the
largest and fastest growing online community for Chris6an singles, and JDate.com,
responsible for more Jewish marriages than all other da6ng sites combined. The data
included in the slides succeeding is collected from a survey of more than 2,600 U.S.
singles between the ages of 18 and 59. The report covers topics of signicance in
todays da6ng climate including habits and expecta6ons from courtship to marriage,
da6ng e6queOe, social and familial inuence on rela6onships, indelity and more. The
report also highlights variances between age groups and genders.

For a second consecu6ve year, Chris6anMingle and JDate partnered with licensed
psychotherapist and rela6onship expert Rachel Sussman, LCSW, to evaluate the State of
Da6ng in America results and put them in the context of larger na6onal trends and
clinical ndings.

Key Findings

Singles weigh in with a more liberal a9tude on what cons)tutes chea)ng in a rela)onship:
Eighty-six percent of men and 92 percent of women consider having sex with another person repeatedly
as being unfaithful in a rela6onship. (slide 62)
In 2013, 82 percent of women and 56 percent of men believed tex6ng or online ir6ng counts as being
unfaithful. In 2014, the number of women who believe a irta6ous message is considered chea6ng
dropped signicantly to 68 percent, while men observed a slight decrease to 51 percent. (slide 62)
In 2014, 90 percent of women, vs. 100 percent in 2013, agree passionately kissing someone else is
chea6ng. The number decreases for men as well, with only 75 percent agreeing vs. 86 percent in 2013.
(slide 62)
Nearly a quarter of singles would consider marrying someone who was unfaithful to them while da6ng.
(slide 63)
Twenty-eight percent of respondents admit to having been unfaithful in a prior rela6onship, which is a
slight increase from 2013, when only 22 percent admiOed to indelity. (slide 63)
Age, children and gender roles all play a major role in da)ng preferences:
Two-thirds of men would prefer to date someone younger than them, though one-third say they are
looking for an older woman. On the ip side, 83 percent of women would rather date someone older
than them. (slide 32)
Women were slightly more likely to consider marrying someone with children from a past rela6onship,
with 80 percent saying they denitely or probably would vs. 69 percent of men. However, interest
dropped drama6cally if a poten6al partner had children from mul6ple rela6onships. (slide 34)
Thirty-nine percent of women think the man should be the primary breadwinner, but only 23 percent of
men agree, a decrease from last years 32 percent of men. Interes6ngly, in 2013, women didnt feel as

strongly with only 34 percent sta6ng the man should be bringing home the bacon. (slide 46)

Key Findings Cont.

First-date e)queDe plays a major role in determining if singles want to move on to the second
date:
The majority of singles say 1-2 drinks on a rst date is acceptable, though men tend to be a liOle
more lenient, with 17 percent saying its no problem if their date has 3-5 drinks (vs. 4 percent of
women). (slide 19)
If a prospec6ve partner gets drunk on the rst date, 72 percent of men would look past it and go
out with her again, though its much tougher to get a second chance with women (only 41
percent would go out with a drunk date again). (slide 21)
Fiay percent of singles say the biggest rst date food faux pas is being a messy eater, and 23
percent of women do not want the man to order for her. (slide 16)
Almost two-thirds of all respondents feel the man should pay for the rst date. Men tend to feel
stronger about this, with 69 percent saying the man should pay, and only 55 percent of women
agreeing. (slide 45)
Is chivalry dead? Expecta6ons for who foots the bill have changed over the past year, with only
69 percent of men saying the man should pay (vs. last years 78 percent). (slide 45)
Is this a date? Sixty-nine percent of singles are at least somewhat confused about whether their
ou6ng with someone theyre interested in is in fact a date or not. (slide 10)

Key Findings Cont.

Findings reveal that da)ng deal breakers can come in all forms:
For men, the top three da6ng deal breakers are hygiene (35 percent), smoking (24 percent) and
weight (14 percent); and for women, its hygiene (34 percent), unemployment (21 percent), and
a 6e for third between drinking habits and smoking (16 percent each). (slide 22)
The majority of singles (66 percent) would break up with someone if he or she didnt get along
with their friends. (slide 24)
The s)gma of online da)ng is a thing of the past:
Eighty-ve percent of singles say online da6ng is socially acceptable and two out of three singles
know people who have met through online da6ng. (slide 26)
Ninety-four percent of respondents believe online da6ng expands their da6ng pool. (slide 28)
Eighty percent of singles agree online da6ng is beOer at nding a match than family members
and 78 percent agree online da6ng is beOer at nding a match than friends. (slide 28)

Methodology
The following data summarizes the responses of a 20-minute online survey, which was
administered by an independent research rm between September 10 and 20, 2013.
The criteria for respondents included:
Between the ages of 18 and 59
Singles who are currently da6ng, are planning to date or are in a commiOed rela6onship
las6ng less than two years
Male or female
Located in the United States
English speaking
Internet access

A total of 2,647 respondents par6cipated in the survey, with Jewish online da6ng respondents
being oversampled. The respondents consisted of 527 non-online daters, which were recruited
through an online database, and 2,120 online daters, which were recruited through a na6onal
online panel (1,011) and from the JDate database (1,109). Results from the total sample can be
interpreted to be accurate with a 3% condence interval. Results have been weighted to reect
the U.S. popula6on based on sta6s6cs available from published sources and this survey. Weigh6ng
informa6on is available on the following slide. All research was conducted and data was analyzed
by Quonundrums, Inc.
