EDCI 568 Assignment 2C

Driving Question: What can you discover in agriculture that leads you to a career in advanced technology and science? What is the context of the unit? This unit is targeted at juniors and seniors in high school who are looking at different college degree programs. This unit consists of two parts, a museum exhibit that students visit in person and an online part that takes place on Facebook. Students will apply to be part of the program. Those accepted will be sent a starter packet and asked to go see the exhibit. The museum exhibit will be located at 4 county extension offices: LaPorte, Tippecanoe, Owen, and Dubois County. Students will go to their local extension office and tour the exhibit. The exhibit will contain photos, graphics, computer interactives, and hands-on interactives. Facebook is the second part of the unit. Students will join a Facebook group that will provide ongoing learning about the field of agriculture. This will consist of a quiz, guest speakers, discussions, and a video. Two tools will be used in conjunction with Facebook to provide students with more engaging lessons. Ustream is a Facebook app that will allow guest speakers to stream live video onto Facebook. This will allow for guest speakers to engage in conversations with students and answer their questions. Additionally, Articulates Storyline will provide guided learning with a quiz. These two parts will be tied together. After touring the museum exhibit, leaners will be asked to join the Facebook group. Their first task upon joining the group is to discuss what they learned in the museum exhibit. The Facebook portion of the unit will allow them to further develop their knowledge and understanding as well as focus on their interests. Learner motivation Guidance counselors will direct students who are juniors or seniors to become involved in the unit. They will make students aware that successful participation in the program will lead to a $500 scholarship at Purdue Universitys College of Agriculture. Guidance counselors will make students aware of the limited openings in the unit and suggest they apply quickly in order to create a demand. This will motivate learners in two ways, intrinsic and extrinsic. The first reason is intrinsic; they want to find a degree program and career that excites them. They will also be motivated extrinsically because they will want the $500 scholarship. What Will Learners investigate? In order to investigate the driving question, learners will be answering the following questions: What majors are available in agriculture? Why should you consider a career in agriculture?

What technology is used in agriculture? What sciences are used in agriculture? What are your career options when you have a degree in agriculture? How do current students in agriculture feel about their degree program? What would you do if you had a degree in agriculture?

How will you monitor student learning during the unit? Student learning in the museum part of this unit will mainly be monitored by summative assessment. The students will complete their starter packet during the exhibit. The starter packet, example below, will be assessed by extension coordinators after it is submitted online. The only summative feedback during the exhibit will be the interactives. These will provide immediate feedback to the students and help them to gain an understanding of different career activities. Interactives:
A computer game where the learner studies animal health in a chicken coop to simulate a career in animal science. A balancing game will provide a challenge for learners to test their creativeness in balancing grain costs with the money spent to grow the grain. A puzzle will let learners test how a seed can be modified by not allowing bugs to destroy it.

Student learning during the Facebook portion of the unit will be monitored by both formative and summative assessment. As students join the group for the first time they will be directed to take a quiz. The quiz questions are in the starter packet and the students will submit the answers they have written down. Extension coordinators will monitor the comment section of the guest speakers and videos that the students will be asked to watch. In the comments area, students can ask questions, discuss, and submit their answers to questions. The comment area will be the main form of communication during the unit. Students or extension coordinators may need to talk to one another in other ways such as direct messages but this will not be the main form of classroom discussion. To organize the monitoring of the comment section, extension coordinators will use a checklist method to keep track of the answers the students complete. They will be looking for students to communicate complete thoughts and fulfill the question requirements. The final summative project will be a video project that the students complete. They will share this video on the Facebook group page and discuss their interests in agriculture and what careers they are interested in.

What evidence/artifacts will your student produce to demonstrate the desired learning? Initial quiz from starter packet - After touring an exhibit the students will complete a starter packet to show an understanding and a growth of knowledge from the content of the exhibit. Answers submitted in comments section After watching guest speakers and videos of current agriculture students, the students will submit answers to the questions presented to them in the comments section of the video. These answers will be visible to the other students and allow for discussions as well as students to rethink their own ideas. Video project The final project will students composing a video that contains their interest in agriculture as well as what careers they think they may want to do. It will be a cumulative project that asks them to reflect on all of their prior activities. How will you assess students' processes and products (e.g., rubrics, checklists, presentations, exams)? Checklists Extension coordinators will document the students participation in the program. As students engage in the activities, extension coordinators will monitor their activity. They will use a checklist to ensure students complete all of the steps in the unit. Students who complete all of the steps will be eligible for the $500 scholarship to Purdue Universitys College of Agriculture.
