Estrella Project - Geology

The focus of the fieldwork was on studying mineralized structures and visiting mines. In the process of the visits many outcrops were observed. In the area of interest the presence of volcanic and volcanosedimentary rocks of intermediate to felsic composition which include pyroclastic flows and tuffs of Jurassic age, dominate. There is debate as to whether they were and/or when they were affected by late Tertiary volcanism. In the veins we observed what appears to be intrusive granodiorite. These intrusions of Jurassic rocks along the zone of gold mineralization would support the idea of a tensional environment in these zones since Jurassic times. However, in other areas, an orthogneiss or pseudogniessic intrusive rock crops out suggesting that the older Precambrian basement complex is possibly present beneath the felsic volcanic layers (Figs. 9, 10 and 11) in the bottom of the caldera in this sector. More basic geologic studies are definitely necessary to understand the geologic processes that operated on this area and brought Au rich fluids into faults and fractures. Figure 9 texture.
