Natural Resources Mrs.

Masterson, 2nd Grade Christine Joannidis April 18th, 2013 Lesson Essential Question: How is each natural resource used? Objective: Students will be able to define how human beings use each natural resource. Objective Students will be able to define how human beings use each natural resource and why they are important. Assessment Students will complete a written hand out detailing how each natural resource is used.

Materials: - Information sheet about each natural resource. - Information summary fill-in sheet for each natural resource. - Natural Resource worksheet Pre-lesson and Prior Knowledge: The students know what natural resources are and why they are important. Lesson Beginning: The students will review with a short class discussion what natural resources are. The teacher will go over with the students why natural resources are important. They will discuss that people need earths natural resources to survive. The class will have a discussion about how we only have a limited supply of natural resources and that is why it is important to preserve and take care of them. Instructional Plan: 1. Students will be told they are going to become experts on one natural resource today and then have the chance to teach their classmates. 2. The teacher will model for the students how they are going to read the articles as a group and how they are going to extract the important information. She will also model how to answer the questions. 3. Students will be broken up into groups of 4, and given an information article on one resource, defining how it is used, the importance of that natural resource, and why it is necessary to protect it. 4. Students will work together to complete an information handout to help present the information they learned to the class. 5. Groups will come back together as a class to the reading carpet and each group will present what they learned about their resource to the class. Differentiation:

Teacher will be walking around the classroom to help students who need help completing the assignment. When working at their desks, students that have a good understanding of the topic will sit near students who do not have a good understanding of the topic. Students who are finished will be allowed to explore the activities at the activity center.

Questions: What are some ways you use natural resources in your daily life? What are some examples of natural resources? What do you think would happen if we had no natural resources? Why are natural resources important? How can we protect our natural resources? Classroom Management Teacher will remind students of the classroom rules prior to the lesson. Teacher will utilize the behavior mountain during the lesson. Reminders of the behavior mountain will be given before the lesson and throughout the lesson as necessary. When the students are good, they get to move up the mountain. If they make it to the top of the mountain, they will receive a prize. Teacher will utilize Mrs. Mastersons hands and eyes technique if the students are not focused. Teacher will be walking around the classroom making sure students are on task while they are working on their assignment. Closure: Students will be sent back to their desks and will complete a handout summarizing the uses of all the natural resources covered by each group. The students can go around and ask their classmates to share what they remember learning. The students will work together to go over each natural resource. The teacher will then ask the class to share what they learned today.
