Section 8.1
each fraction
Aim
How
do we find and simplify the ratio of two numbers? How do we use proportions to solve real life problems? (Think-Pair-Share)
Ratios
How
do we write them?
to b or a:b
Example 1/Checkpoint 1
12cm a. 4m
12 400 3 100
6 ft b. 18in 72 18
4 1
Example 2
The perimeter of rectangle ABCD is 60 centimeters. The ratio of AB:BC is 3:2. Find the length and width of the rectangle.
Example 2 Continued
Length (l) = 3x Width (w) = 2x 2l + 2w = P 2(3x) + 2(2x) = 60 6x + 4x = 60 10x = 60 x=6 So the length is 18 cm and the width is 12 cm
Checkpoint 2
The perimeter of the isosceles triangle is 56 in. The ratio of LM:MN is 5:4. Find the lengths of the sides and the base of the triangle.
Checkpoint 2 Solution
side + side + base = 56 5x + 5x + 4x = 56 14x = 56 x=4 So the sides are 20 inches and the base is 16 inches
Example 3
The measure of the angles in JKL are in the extended ratio of 1:2:3. Find the measures of the angles. 2x x + 2x + 3x = 180 6x = 180 x 3x x = 30
So the angle measures are 30, 60, and 90
Checkpoint 3
The ratios of the side lengths of DEF to the corresponding side lengths of ABC are 2:1. Find the unknown lengths.
Checkpoint 3 Continued
AB = 4 in DF = 6 in Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find CB.
3 2 4 2 CB 2 9 16 CB 2 25 CB CB 5 in
So EF = 10 in
Terms
Proportion an equation that equates two ratios.
extreme mean
a c b d
mean extreme
The numbers a and d are the extremes of the proportion. The numbers b and c are the means of the proportion.
Properties of Proportions
1. Cross Product Property The product of the extremes equals the product of the means.
If a c , then ad bc. b d
2. Reciprocal Property If two ratios are equal, then their reciprocals are also equal.
a c b d If , then . b d a c
Example 4/Checkpoint 4
Solve the proportions
4 5 a. x 7
b. 3 2 y2 y
5x = 28 x = 28/5
3y = 2(y + 2)
3y = 2y + 4 y=4
