AP/IB Chemistry Lab Ch.

17 Electrochemical Cells Design Lab

Name: Electrochemical Cells

This week we are examining the components and functions of electrochemical (galvanic) cells. Your laboratory task is to investigate (quantitatively) a factor influencing the voltage developed by an electrochemical (galvanic) cell. To complete your task, you will have access to the following basic materials: Goals: As you complete this investigation, you will: 1. Develop a procedure for measuring the voltage developed by a galvanic cell constructed from metals and solutions of their salts. 2. Investigate (quantitatively) a factor that affects the voltage developed by the galvanic cell. 3. Collect relevant data. 4. Report your findings in an appropriate scientific manner. Materials: Various metals (lead, zinc, aluminum, iron, and copper, other metals/chemicals upon request and availability) Nitrate salts of the metals (others by request/availability) Standard laboratory equipment LabPro Voltmeter Conductivity Probes Other equipment by request/availability Getting Started: Start by selecting an oxidation/reduction reaction system you wish to study. Then you will select a factor you wish to investigate that may affect the voltage developed by the reaction. Then design procedures for the investigation, and report your results according to the IB rubric standards. Remember, a good design lab does not need to be overly complex in theory or scope, but does need to be well designed!!! Pre-Lab Assignment: Design a suitable procedure according to the Design specifications of your lab rubric. Remember to include: o Materials o Procedure, with description of how variables will be controlled/manipulated Use the Lab Design Starter Sheet showing your research, sources, and development of your research question to help you. Your prelab will be checked for all elements of Design. After completing your lab, you will present your findings in a formal report. This work will be assessed on all three criteria (D, DCP, CE) of the IB Lab Rubric.
