ITE 360 Introduction to Multicultural Education

Teachings & Thoughts from DrB Week 5 (February 10-16, 2014) <Three Pages>

From the moment students enter the school, the most important factor in their success is not the color of their skin or the income of their parents, its the person standing at the front of the classroom. Barack Obama, 2009 It is great to see that 15 out of 16 participants in this class completed and submitted their Response Paper #1 on time (that is 94% and I hope to soon have 100% papers submitted). All of you labeled your papers correctly having your name as part of the document. Yippee! A few of you needed to address the twelve characteristics more directly to yourself or made too many grammar errors to get full credit, but all of you seemed to learn more about yourself multiculturally. I certainly felt privileged to read your stories according to the 12 Attributes of Culture and thank you for sharing. I have graded all the papers I have received and returned them to you through Laulima. The Laulima site records the exact time you submit your work for each of your assignments and that is how I grade them first come first served. If you turned in your paper late, you most likely will get your paper returned late. So thanks for turning your papers in on time. There are three of you still having difficulty submitting work on the Laulima site, but you need to do that so as to be connected to the Grading Tool on Laulima. When you submit, the site will say late but two of you submitted your work on time through email, so pay no heed to the late designation. I accepted work through email, but I need to get all of you (100%) submitting your work through Laulima. What did I learn from reading your papers, besides the obvious of how you relate you to the 12 attributes? I, who have been teaching for 47 years, learned three new things from my students (you who are reading this) and I will share them here with you in case you didnt read everyones autobiography like I did.
1. I learned a new word pescetarian, which means the person eats only fish and no other meats (thanks, Kellie for teaching me this new word). 2. I learned more about Capoeira Angola when Gregory mention this in his paper and shared how it had affected him. I googled the words and learned more about it. 3. And the third thing I learned (thanks, Alanna) was about a resource about aging. Surfing for Life is a documentary about aging and has a great discussion guide I read at this website (http://www.surfingforlife.com/surfing.pdf). If you add up the years I have been teaching (47 years) to my age I started teaching (right out of college) you can imagine how aging is a great concern to be personally.

When you become teachers, you too will learn from your students, no matter how long you teach or what age you teach, so be opened to being life-long learners as you teach. Have you received weekly credit for your "attendance" in this class? Remember you get points towards your grade for attendance (DrB's Teachings) AND for participation (Discussion Board). Attendance questions from DrB's Teachings are the quick email 1

responses. Everyone answered Week One - what is your favorite color and Week Two what is your favorite movie? But for Week Three and Week Four there are lots of pukas (holes) in my attendance record. This weeks attendance question will be what is another name for "teacher"? And there is no wrong answer. You can tell me the name of teacher in another language (like Hawaiian) or you can submit a one-word noun to describe another word for teacher. I hope for Week 5 we can get back to that 100% attendance record and since some of you are having difficulty with Laulima, I will send this weeks lesson by email as well as put on the Weebly dropdown menu. I want you to get into the teacher education field, for each of you sound like you would make excellent teachers. For the interviews for teacher education that will be coming up during the months of March and April for the Fall 2014 Admittance, you must write an essay (at the time of your interview). Pay attention to your grammar as well as content and remember to edit your work. Here are some grammar pointers for you to remember that were mistakes made on some of your papers that were submitted: 1. When writing a preposition using: of, for, as, from, in, by, etc. use a comma after the phrase. For an example: In Hawaii, or After meeting them, or In my opinion, 2. When writing the word I always capitalize it. 3. When writing a word that starts with a vowel, be sure and use an and not a to describe that word. For example: an everlasting impact, not a everlasting impact. 4. Names of religion should always start with a capital letter. For example: Catholic, Protestine or if you are talking about a language like English proper nouns. 5. In formal writing, numbers from 1-10 should always be written out, i.e. I have 5 sisters and 2 brothers should be: I have five sisters and two brothers. Numbers over ten can be stated 12 or 15 or whatever. 6. And in formal papers, limit the use of conjunction words like Id for I would have or Im for I am. This past week you had extensive work in your textbook by Cushner and we had 88% (14 out of 16) responses in answering the Discussion Board prompts. You can always enter these responses late if you are having trouble with Laulima or your computer. I am enjoying reading all your postings. I think everyone has his or her Cushner textbook except one person and hers is on its way. Please let me know if you still need that workbook. I also need to know if everyone has the Rethinking Columbus textbook. Since the company will not mail the book to a post office address, I have purchased and received four copies. One of the books is already spoken for so that leaves three books that I have available if you still need the book. The book with shipping cost was $22.00. Please email me if you would like to make arrangements to get the book to you. Otherwise, I will just hold onto them for the next time I teach ITE 360, which may be this summer. I have offered to teach this course for any neighboring island perspective student that may need it. If any of your friends need the course for this summer, let me know as well as Thomas Benjamin on Maui or Karen Wilson on Hawaii/Kauai islands.

This coming week you will be doing one of my favorite assignments - your collage. Please remember to "title" your work with a creative title other than "My Collage". All artists title their work and YOU are definitely a work of art. There will be no readings or Discussion Board postings in order to give you extra time in designing your Collage and writing your paper to describe your collage. Collage and Description. I really look forward to receiving this assignment for it allows each of you to display your own individual creativity to shine. All of the collages and descriptions are due by Sunday, February 16 and I am really looking forward to seeing all the creative, multicultural depictions of you, your community, and/or your future class. This assignment was one that I use to do for our face-to-face class, where we would have an art walk around the room looking at each persons collage. Then we took turns summarizing how and what our thoughts were in designing the collage. I miss our art walk but we will be able to do it virtually, if each person scans and posts their collage on the Discussion Board. You can go to Submit Assignments and write inline text for your Collage I have uploaded my collage on the Discussion Board and then attach your description of your collage. I will check the discussion board, read your description and can post your points that is connected to the Grade book from Submit Assignments. That way you do not have to post the actual collage twice. Remember to look under Assignments on the Weebly sight for the full-page description of the Collage assignment and also for the rubric, which will be used to assess your assignment. Have a great week and Happy Valentines Day if you celebrate it!
