Lesson Title: 1.28.14 Zinc Chloride lab write up

Strand 1, Concept 4, PO 1 For a scientific investigation, choose an appropriate method for communicating the results. Strand 1, Concept 4, PO 4 Support conclusion with logical scientific arguments. Language Objective: 11-12. WHST.2.E Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from and supports the information or explanation provided. Terminal Objective: Students will be able to complete/revise their result and discussion sections of the zinc chloride lab report. Anticipatory Set: 1. Personal anecdote on lab report writing. 2. http://homepage.smc.edu/gallogly_ethan/sample_lab_reports.htm (examples of a good and bad lab report). Blooms Level Analysis Sub-Objective Students will be able to compare the different elements of the two different lab reports shown during the anticipatory set. Time 5 mins Teaching Strategy Teacher will tell a story about his past lab report writing experience that led him to learn the importance of lab report to grab the attention of the learners. Teacher will raise questions while showing the report examples. what difference can you see?, what is something that you can learn from this example?, what key elements should a good lab report have? and why are Active Student Participation/ Check for Understanding Students will very quickly look through the text and state the visible differences in the two lab reports. (http://homepage.smc.edu/gallogly_ethan/sam ple_lab_reports.htm ) Students will participate and answer the questions that teacher will raise by either raising their hands. Then they must defend their findings and answers.

they important? Synthesis Students will be able to compose a list of key elements that is required for completing their respective section of the lab. 10 mins Teacher will stress that they must finish the lab report today. As for those who cannot do so, they will be required to come either during advisory hour or after school. Students will read the texts carefully within the time frame and write 3 questions that an exemplary lab report should answer. (each student will receive different handout in the group of three, therefore, they must try to understand the elements on their own.)

Teacher will organize the students into groups of three (different from their normal lab partners.) Then the teacher will pass out Students are free to ask for assistance from the handouts 1,2, and 3 to each individual student in teacher during this time. the group. Teacher will stress that they will only have the handouts for 5 mins. So they must read carefully. The teacher will ask the learners to read the handouts, which point out the important key elements of a good lab report must have, and compose 3 questions which their group must answer in that perspective section.

Synthesis

Students will be able to write introduction, result, and discussion section based on their partners guidelines.

10 mins for introductio n and result. 15 mins for conclusion

Teacher will now ask the students will answer the questions or include the key-elements, which their partners had previously written, in their lab reports. (Introduction, result, and conclusion.) Teacher will monitor the classroom and provide assistance or verb cues to those who are troubled by the writing. Teacher will instruct students to switch paper and comment on their partners paper. They

Students will read the key elements and include those elements in their report. Students are encouraged to talk amongst each other during the introduction and result section of the lab. However, they must work on their own to write the conclusion.

remarks and feedbacks. They are also encouraged to give praise to the paper. Students will complete and make adjustments for the lab based on the feedbacks which they will receive from their partners. The students who cannot finish on time will take out their agenda to be signed.

Synthesis

Students will be able to complete/revise their result and discussion sections of the zinc chloride lab report.

5 mins

Teacher will ask the students to make final adjustment to their lab report. Teacher will sign the agendas of those who cannot finish on time. Teacher will collect the paper before they leave.

Closure: Finishing up and make final adjustments to their lab report. Materials Needed: Handouts will be included in the file.
