The Santa Cruz Summit on Youth Leadership was held on June3, 2013 June 7, 2013. Planned and facilitated by Ms. Greta Solinap with the support of others, the Summit was led by fifteen (15) Harvard College youth leaders. The classes offered at the Summit were Cooking, Martial Arts, Debate/Oratory Theatre, Storytelling, Sports, Psychology, Organic Chemistry, Understanding the Adolescent Brain, Creative Writing, Writing your Resume and Position Statement, Mathematics, and International Relations. One hundred and fifty-six (154) students from grades 8-12 participated in the Summit: 40% were male and 60% female. 40 % of the respondents indicated they were 8th graders; 15%: 9th graders, 13%:10th graders, 14%: 11th graders, and 18%: 12th graders. Of the 154 attendees, 133 or 85% completed the Youth Leadership Survey which was an evaluation of the Summit and its impact on the participants. The Youth Leadership Survey consisted of two separate question sections. The first was a scale rating on all aspects of the Summit and the second consisted of two essay questions that asked for student feedback. The survey responses showed positive feedback for every section of the Summit. For example, answers to the following questions are illustrative of the success of the Summit: Attending the Summit on Youth Leadership was a very good use of my time and a valuable experience: 91% (121) Strongly agreed, 7.6% (10) agreed, and .8% (1) neutral. Presentations, workshops, and guest speaker provided me with important information that will guide me through my education, college and career choices. 73.7% (98) strongly agreed, 22.6% (30) agreed, 3% (4) neutral, and .8%(1) strongly disagreed. Seminar leaders were knowledgeable and engaging. 83.5% (111) Strongly agreed, 13.5% (18) agree, 3% (4) neutral. My participation in the Physical and extracurricular activities inspired me to become more active. 60.2% (80) Strongly agreed, 28.6% (38) agree, 10.5% (14) neutral, and .8% (1) strongly disagree. Healthy meals and snacks were available throughout the summit. 60% (78) Strongly agreed, 29.2% (38) agree, 10% (13) neutral, and .8% (1) disagree. Fitness and Nutrition are important factors in succeeding in academics and becoming a leader. 62.4% (83) Strongly agreed, 30.1% (40) agree, 6% (8) neutral, 8% (1) disagree, and .8%(1) strongly disagree. The answers to the essay questions were also very positive. For example the first essay question asks students to indicate As a result of attending the five day summit, I will now.. Through their answers, students reported a great respect for the Summit Leaders. They were also thankful for having the opportunity to attend the summit; demonstrated a willingness to become leaders in school and their community; felt better prepared for SATS (and thankful for the SAT books) , College, and High School Classes; expressed they will make better use of their time; and vowed to live a healthier more active lives.

With regard to recommendations for next year, participants requested: A longer Summit next year; To have classes separated by grades; and finally The Summit should try to adhere to the schedule. Provide water to students Finally, all responses to the essay questions can be found in Attachment 1.

The following is a list of the responses students gave to Questions 10 and 11. One-hundred and twenty-five participants responded to question 10 and one-hundred and six to question 11. The comments have not been edited and reflect each actual students response.

I will stop procrastinating and will start studying for SATS I will know how to get a good SAT score. I have also learned many leadership skills that will help me out in the future I know more about organic chemistry and be more prepared to take notes in college I will now start applying to all those $ scholarships and not procrastinate my senior Year. I will now focus more on my grades and on becoming a great leader. Such a great program for HS Seniors. I will now know more about other subjects, know what college is like, and know how to be a leader Know the importance of school and how it relates to getting into college. I learned how to make better decisions in life. The summit helped me focus I am encouraged to get involved in more programs. I am motivated to do my best in school so I can get a scholarship. I will take what learned from the summit to focus on how to be a better leader in band. Encouraged to do best in school and apply to college even if I think I wont get in. This is because I am more encouraged to do so because of the information obtained from the college workshop and seminar leaders

I liked everything about the summit. This was a really great opportunity. More snacks. More activities! I really liked it and wished it could've been longer. thanks for all the college info Seminar leaders were informative and nice. They should be the same next year. I also enjoyed the cooking and sporting. I recommend activities that make boring subjects like math more fun. Be more organized with my time. Increase field trip time. More fun activities. I like Pie I think the extracurricular activities were best. I had a great time I hope this program continues for a long time. I loved it! I really hope that we do this again.
