Scientific Revolution

During the 1500s and 1600s, the Scientic Revolution changed the way Europeans looked at the world.! People began to make conclusions based on experimentation and observations rather than traditional ideas.!

People began to reject religious explanations in favor of scientic explanations

Nicolaus Copernicus

During the Middle Ages, Europeans believed that the earth was the center of the universe. By the 1500s Nicolaus Copernicus used mathematical formulas to prove that the universe was heliocentric. Heliocentric: the sun is the center of the universe and planets revolve around the sun

Galileo Galilei

In the 1600s Galileo further proved the heliocentric theory! The Church put Galileo on trial and threatened him with death if he did not take back his teachings of the sun (not the earth) being the center of the universe!

If the sun really was the center of the universe it contradicted everything the Church believed about humans being all important!

Isaac Newton

Issaac Newton built on the knowledge of Copernicus and Galileo! He used math to prove the existence of gravity

An agreement between people in a society to give up certain rights and freedoms in exchange for peace, security, and comfort. English writer Believed in Divine rights of Kings. In book Leviathan, said people were selfish and need strong government to prevent social chaos where life is solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. Hobbes social contract theory: humans give up bad freedoms (to kill, steal, rape, etc.) in exchange for being part of a society run. They also submit themselves to a strong govt which can control everyones selfishness.

The Renaissance was supported by the new wealth coming into Spain and Portugal, but also into Italian city-states like Venice and Genoa from trade with Muslims! Kings all over Europe began buying more art, bigger castles and palaces, and paying for huge libraries and universities only for the rich. Why did they do this?
