bewaard is gebleven.
Oftewel lofts die men zelf kon inrichten.
Rotterdam zeer snel verkocht.

Jobs Wharf
This is a book made with passion and devotion. You probably think that this is a book about beautifully furnished
lofts and that is of course true but above all this book is about love: love for a building and how this is expressed
by its residents.
Like many objects of love, this devotion has a very special source. Jobs Wharf is located in Rotterdams Lloyd
Quarter, where the Jobshaven and Schiehaven were created around 1900. Jobs Wharf was built a decade later,
in 1913, and is typical of the prevailing architectural style of that time. The street side is built in traditional fashion
with bricks and mortar, but the harbour side is constructed almost entirely from reinforced concrete, a new building
material at that time. The concrete structure is barely visible because in those days it was normal to clad this brutal
material with stucco, made to resemble natural stone. The wharf saw good service until the harbours were extended
to the west of Rotterdam. By the 1980s the Lloyd Quarter was largely abandoned and several imposing buildings in
the area were demolished. Jobs Wharf narrowly escaped the same fate.
The building was too special to be left unused. NOW & WOW once the biggest nightclub in the Netherlands
made grateful use of the space the building had to offer and attracted huge numbers of visitors in those years. Once
the creative pioneers had made the area known and its value was widely accepted, plans were developed to restore
the neglected building and give it a new lease of life. In recognition of its exceptional qualities, Jobs Wharf was
granted protected status in 2000. It is one of the few buildings in Rotterdam in which the relationship to the harbour
loading, unloading and storing remains intact.
Providing light, views and space through the addition of three atria has transformed Jobs Wharf from a rough
diamond into a glistening crystal. These atria contain the new additions such as staircases and lifts. Original
faade elements such as warehouse doors and cranes have been reinstated. A paradoxical design principle has
been employed: removing certain components while restoring certain others. This has been a daring but highly
successful intervention. The warehouse floors have delivered highly flexible living spaces: lofts whose layouts can be
determined by the residents themselves. Despite those who said, during the design phase, that lofts would never
sell in Rotterdam, they quickly sold out. Jobs Wharf has attracted people from far and wide. It was love at first sight.
Those who believed in the beauty and fie qualities of this monument have become devoted guardians. Rotterdam
City Council, the Rijksdienst voor Cultureel Erfgoed, AM, BAM Woningbouw, Mei Architecten and many other
parties have devoted their energies to ensuring that this love would be repaid.
Only now that the former warehouse is entering its fifth year in its new function can we see the fruits of this devotion:
a community of more than two hundred enthusiastic residents, who have embraced the building heart and soul.
These dedicated residents have given their beloved object a gift, perhaps the most beautiful and costly gift they
have ever given. But what is more beautiful that to be able to enjoy that gift every day? We hope this book will give
you an opportunity to enjoy these lofts, which have been created out of love for this great building.

The construction of an
architect
Rob van den Hil is one of the
many architects who lives in
Jobs Wharf. When he bought
the apartment, the position of
the bathroom, toilet, kitchen
and storage was already fixed.
He altered the space to meet
his wishes with a few ingenious
interventions. He lengthened
one of the walls, creating a niche
and a better separation between
the kitchen area and the main
living space. He lowered the
ceiling height in the bedroom
with a stretched cloth, making
the space more intimate but
also lighter. Installing a wall of
cabinets he created a pleasant
office with a desk, computer and drawing table. He also
has enough space to meet his clients. I have everything
I need in 100m. The light comes in via the atrium and
two windows on the street side. The high ceiling creates
allure and atmosphere.

Thijs as creative building
manager and Maaike as
architect conceived a
practical layout for their
apartment and built it. Because
the windows are so high on this
storey, I designed a podium for
our worktable, she explains.
This way we have better light
and can enjoy the view over the
water. Two large opaque,
glass sliding doors divide the
apartment into a living area and
an area for working, sleeping
and bathing.
It is a very practical solution,
which ensures optimum natural
lighting. We kept to light grey
and white and pale wood.
The broad vertical louvres admit plenty of light via the
atrium. Thijs: The tap for the bath is made after our
own design.

Relaxed enjoyment
The kitchen and large dining
table form the heart of this
apartment. Clariet and Ronald
host regular dinner parties.
Many of the objects in the
apartment have a story to
tell about the couples past.
For example, Ronald bought
the screen print of a woman
kissing for his future wife at
an exhibition in a caf in The
Hague.
The samovar and the icons are
family heirlooms. My mother
is Russian, explains Clariet.
We have made many journeys
to France together and have
always found nice things that
fit well here, says Ronald. The
balcony is an oasis of peace, where even apples grow.
We love this place, both inside and out. The couple
are so attached to their apartment that they held their
wedding reception at home and received more than a
hundred guests.

Variations in Vintage
Joops and Twans 140 m
apartment was the show flat
when the Jobs Wharf
apartments went on sale. The
couple drastically altered the
layout by building a long block
to house the hallway, toilet,
bathroom, kitchen, workspace
and storage. Twan drew the new
plan and undertook part of the
work himself. The kitchen has a
lowered ceiling, which provides
excellent storage space. There
is similar storage space above
the bed. The apartment is
furnished with design classics
and vintage finds assembled
over the years.
We derive a lot of pleasure from
the terrace, says Joop. Its great to see how good the
plants I brought with me are doing here. The planting
includes a fruit tree, hostas, verbena, oleander and a
colourful assortment of tulips in the spring. We can find
true relaxation here.

Unlimited living
Joost van Lubeek and Barbara
Boom live in one of the smaller
apartments in the building
but have a larger bedroom,
bathroom and kitchen than any
of the other residents. If you
have 80 m and break it down
into little rooms, you lose the
whole idea of living in a loft,
says Barbara. They quickly took
the radical decision to keep the
space as empty as possible. We
now have a bathroom, kitchen,
bedroom and living room that
measures 80 m2. Joost is a
captain and musician; Barbara is
a psychologist and viniculturist.
Both are bon vivants and love
to renovate old houses. They
use their apartment in the Jobs Wharf as their base of
operations for the renovation projects. Joost: It is great
to come home here. I can also make good music here.
Barabara adds: When we began on a new project we
asked the neighbours to help us finish off our stock of
wine.

Symphony in red
Peter Paulus en Annemiek Bos
kwamen af op het loft concept
van het Jobs Wharf. On the
lower floor they have an
entrance, bedroom and bathroom and on the upper floor
they have an enormous living
room, measuring 105 m.
Peter: We fell in love with the
buildings industrial aesthetic.
But there is not much of that
in evidence in the penthouse,
so we screwed these plates to
the ceiling. Its a good job we
have lots of friends because it
was a hell of a job! Annemiek
adds: In our previous home
we learned that a large space
with only hard materials is
unpleasant. Thats why we decided to have carpets and
curtains. The couples preference for anthracite and
metallic grey is evident in the smallest details such as
skirting boards and electrical sockets and their love of
various shades of red is expressed in the collection of
designer furniture. Before designing the apartment, they
consulted an interior designer, visited numerous design
stores and leafed through stacks of interiors magazines.
Peter: For me, this apartment really has the wow factor.

Sven Huigen
Fantasy Island
Sven Huigen has given his
apartment a clear layout. A
long wall separates the living
area from the bedroom and
bathroom. The beams in the
atrium were the inspiration
for my bed. explains Sven.
Because he knew best what he
wanted, he designed the metal
construction himself and had it
made. He also made the mural
behind the bed in a romantic
mood. The living room walls are
painted cherry red and are lit
with spots, giving the space a
red glow. The other room has a
variety of lighting: there are not
only lamps in the bath plinth
but also in the tub itself. The
various bath functions are operated by a control panel.
Unfortunately, not on the picture is the projection of a
moving starry sky on the ceiling. In Svens apartment, a
boyhood dream has come true.

Mise-en-scne of furniture
and objects
The Janssen couples main aim
was to create space in their
apartment, They achieved this
by dividing it rigorously in two
parts: the bedroom, bathroom,
toilet and kitchen are accessed
via a long corridor with several
metres of cupboard space. This
bisection makes it possible to
enjoy the optimal view of the
harbour from the living room.
The couple is enthusiastic about
the location of St.Job: close to
the centre and to the park with
plenty of space for walking and
running.
They have collected the objects
in the apartment over the past
twenty years. When the couple moved in, they did
not need to buy anything new. They have carefully
combined family heirlooms with special pieces they
collected while living abroad. The basis for this mise
en scne is a neutral, white epoxy resin floor with
underfloor heating; radiators would have detracted from
such a considered arrangement.
