SOME CONSTRAINTS

IN THE ENGLISH TEACHING AND LEARNING PROCESS


AT SD MUHAMMADIYAH GIRIKERTO

ABSTRACT

This research aims to find out and describe some constraints in the English
teaching and learning process at SD Muhammadiyah Girikerto.
This study is descriptive qualitative and the researcher is the key
instrument. The subjects were the headmaster, the English teacher, the other
teachers, and the students of SD Muhammadiyah Girikerto. The researcher
collected the data by observing the English teaching and learning process and
conducting in-depth interviews with the headmaster, the English teacher, the other
teachers, and the students of SD Muhammadiyah Girikerto. To get the
trustworthiness of the data, the researcher used the triangulation technique.
The result shows that there are constraints faced by the teacher, the
students, and the constraints concerning the materials, time and space. The
constraints faced by the teacher relate to: 1) uncooperative students; 2) low
motivated students; and 3) class size. The constraints faced by the students are
related to: 1) the classroom management; and 2) the learners’ socioeconomic
background. The constraints concerning the materials by the teacher are related to
the materials selection. The constraints concerning the materials by the students
are related to: 1) spelling; and 2) test. The constraints concerning time and space
are related to inconducive classroom and time allocation.
