Cento Assignment

Due:___________________ Throughout this semester, we will be reading MANY different kinds of literature. We will read poems, short stories, and novels that cover many types of themes and ideas. Some things you read will seem boring to you, and others may stick out to you. Your job is to pay attention to all the moments where a work of literature stuck out to you and made an impression on you. This can be from our class readings or from books you read at home. Whenever you find a line that seems important to you, I want you to: i. Write it down ii. Write down what it was from and from what page/stanza Thats it... Just write it down. Later in the semester (once you have compiled all of your lines that stuck out to you), you will create a cento. A cento is a poem that is made up of other pieces of literature. This may SOUND like plagiarism, but it is not as long as you give credit to the original writers in a works cited section. Think of this poem as a quilt. You bring together all different kinds of patterns in different sizes and shapes to create one large masterpiece. This poem will become yours and you will be able to transform these old lines into something new!!! Have fun with this assignment. You will be amazed at what you can create. :)
