This report looks at how police attitudes affect efforts to control crime, how common abuse of authority is, and what strategies would be most effective in preventing police from abusing authority. This study also looked at how the role of community-oriented policing has led police to show greater respect of the rights of their citizens.
This study found that although majority of officers disprove of the use of excessive force, some believe officers should be permitted to use more force than allowed by standards currently. This survey exposed a code of silence inherent in police organizations. Despite some positive findings, this study shows that police abuse remains a problem that needs to be addressed by policymakers and police administrators to improve policing practices.
