Teenage pregnancy is a social menace that discomforts our society today. It may be defined as
when a girl below the age of twenty years becomes pregnant.
There are several causes of teenage pregnancy. These include influence of victim by peers to
indulge in pre marital sex, inadequate parental control of teenage girls, lack of sex education for
young girls and rape of young girls.
In consequence teenage pregnancy affects the individual involved and the society at large. The
individual may suffer health risk due to complication during and at child birth. Again if the victim
attempts abortion she may lose her life.
In addition, the victim and the baby becomes a burden for the society. The society may suffer
set back because the victim may not attain higher education to contribute meaningfully to its
development.
Nevertheless teenage pregnancy can be controlled through sex education for young girls on
their sexual life and how pregnancy is prevented.
Again parents should offer good upbringing and care of teenage girls and teenage girls should
also keep good friends.
Thus teenage pregnancy should be made to look evil in the society so that all and sundry would
abhor and help fight the menace.
