Subject: 12-1: Time: Half Hour and Quarter Hour

PA Common Core Standards: CC.2.4.3.A.2 Tell and write time to the nearest minute and solve problems by calculating time intervals. I. Performance Objectives: The students will be able to tell and write time to the nearest half hour and quarter hour by creating a student clock and verbally answering problems. II. Instructional Materials A. Pearson Success Net: 12-1 Time to the Half Hour and Quarter Hour a. Clock bingo game B. Hula Hoop C. Large clock times (resources) D. Paint sticks E. Brass clips F. Clock foldable (2) (resources) a. Printed on two different color papers G. Show What You Know Poster H. Three bags a. Marked 1 minute, 3 minute, and 5 minute I. Clock display on board (resources) J. III. Subject Matter/Content A. Prerequisite Skills a. Telling time to the hour B. Key Vocabulary a. Hour a unit of time equal to 60 minutes b. Half hour a unit of time equal to 30 minutes c. Quarter hour a unit of time equal to 15 minutes d. AM anytime from 12:00 midnight until 12:00 noon e. PM anytime from 12:00 noon until 12:00 midnight C. Big Idea: Time can be expressed using different units that are related to each other. IV. Implementation A. Introduction a. Upon arrival, students will draw an analog clock and write the digital time that math class begins on a post-it note. They will paste their answers on the Show What You Know poster. 1. Include example on the board and written instruction: What time do we start math class? Draw the analog clock and write the digital time. Hint: We begin social studies at 10:10 am. [Draw clock showing 10:10].

b. Ask students how telling time makes them feel. c. Poll students whom are correct about the time. d. Share Did You Know Every analog clock or watch that you buy in the store will show 10:10 on it. 10 is a feel good number. B. Development a. Have Hula Hoop time display on front of classroom.

b. Hold paint stick short and long paint stick. Which hands are used to tell time? 1. The short hand tells the hour while the long hand tells the minutes. c. To add to the rest of the clock, it is split up like a pizza into four slices. What goes at the very top? [12] 1. Invite a student to write the response on the board. d. Then, starting at 1, I make my way around the clock. Which number is at the bottom? [6] e. Review times to the hour. Call out random times and use the paint stick to adequately display the times. 1. What happens when the hour is halfway gone? Move minute hand swatter down to the 6. f. Now, what happens when the hour is a quarter of the way gone? Put quarters on two sides of the 3 and 6. g. Introduce 1, 3, and 5 minute bag. 1. The 1 minute bag is easy (time to the half hour and hour). 2. The 3 minute bag is medium (time to the quarter and 5-second interval). 3. The 5 minute point bag is hard (time to the minute).

4. As students correctly answer times, color in a clock displayed on the board. 5. If they are able to fill in a whole hour at the end of the unit, they will receive a special prize! h. Pass out materials to create clock. 1. Two different colored clock papers 2. Brass clips i. Model how to create clock 1. Students will draw a faint vertical and a horizontal line dividing the clock into four parts. 2. At the top, write 12. At the bottom, write 6. On the left, write 9. On the right, write 3. 3. Fill in the remaining numbers. 4. Cut slits between each number on the clock. 5. Behind the 12, write 0. Behind the 3, write 15 and circle it (for quarter). Behind the 6, write 30. Behind the 9, write 45 and circle it (for quarter). 6. Paste clock onto back of other clock. Do not paste down the slits! 7. Place the brass clips for minute and hour.

Pass out time cards at each table to assess. 1. Three cards will be distributed 3/table. 2. Students will flip over with teacher prompt.

Students can work together to create the times on their clocks. 3. Model proper time on front of board. k. How do I know the difference between one oclock in the morning and one oclock at night? 1. A.M. anytime from midnight until noon 2. P.M. anytime from noon until midnight 3. What is something we do in the A.M? What is something we do in the P.M? l. Lets practice more! C. Closure a. Play Smart Board Game: Time Level 1 and Time Level 2. b. Play two rounds to ensure each student gets a turn.

c. Homework: Students will write one activity that they did in the a.m. and one activity that they did in the p.m. today.
