One of the most classic Valentines Day poems come from Gammer Gurtons Garden, by
Joseph Ritson, believed to have been rst published in 1783. The text of the original poem
is below:

The Valentine
The rose is red, the violets blue,
The honeys sweet, and so are you.
Thou art my love, and I am thine;
I drew thee to my Valentine:
The lot was cast, and then I drew,
And fortune said it should be you.
