HOW TO INTERPOLATE PRESSURE DATA OBTAINED BY OTHER TOOLS INTO STRUCTURE FE MODEL VIA PATRAN 1- Complete the solid

model and finite element mesh of the wing by creating all sub-structure groups; Upper skin, Lower skin , Front and rear spar webs, Front and rear spar flanges, Ribs. Create an additional group which includes upper skin and lower skin of the wing and the tip rib of the wing. his group will recei!e the aerodynamic load since they are the e"posed faces. #ou should ha!e a mesh such as the one seen below. $o not forget the mesh the rib at the wing tip.

2- Create a new group to import the aerodynamic load calculated by other tools. For instance call that group %&ero' and make it current. 3- (mport the aerodynamic load into your model file from ) file * import File to import) pressure_data.bdf $uring the import operation do the following selections) +b,ect) Model -ource) MSC Nastran Input .-C /astran (nput +ptions) -elect nodes, elements and load sets only from the right menu Click on pressure_data.bdf and press Apply. #ou should get !ery dense CF$ mesh such the one shown below.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Your aero e!" a#$ %"e !%ru&%ura' e!" u!% "a(e %"e !a e or)*)# a#$ %"e *'o+a' &oor$)#a%e ,ra e o, +o%" o$e'! u!% +e )$e#%)&a'- T"ere,ore. )% a/ +e a *oo$ )$ea %o ,)r!% ) 0or% %"e aero e!" a#$ &"e&1 %"e or)*)#- I# a$$)%)o#. &"e&1 %"e u#)% o, %"e 2)#* %"a% /ou ) 0or% ,or %"e aero e!"- C"e&1 2"e%"er %"e 2)#* $) e#!)o#! are )# . & or a#$ 0re0are /our !%ru&%ura' o$e' a&&or$)#*'/ 34- 0hile the CF$ mesh !iewport is clicked on with the mouse create another !iewport from the top menu and gi!e it a name like Aero Viewport and !iew both !iewports at the same time by the help of the %tile' command.

5- 1lot pressure contours of the CF$ mesh by making the selections shown below from the Loads and 2oundary Condition top menu. For the fringe attributes select continuous style and no element edges.

6- &t this step you need to create a -patial F3. continuous field using the pressure information obtained from CF$ solution. #ou can also follow these steps also from the !ideo. /ame the new field as NewPressure and under the options menu do not click 4$ to 5$ interpolation. Note that the viewport displaying the CFD mesh should be the active viewport while you generate the spatial field. You can activate a viewport by clicking on it.

No%e: Continuous F3. Fields are used to map data 6interpolate7 from one analysis to another 6thermal or aero to structural7 or from one mesh to another 6global to local analysis7. #ou can ha!e more information on -patial F3. fields 6discrete or continous7 from the 1atran8Course8/otes document that is under the ftp site ftp.ae.metu.edu.tr under the &3 9:9 directory. 7- /ow you need to apply the pressure on the CF$ mesh to structure mesh. o do this first you need to create a pressure and use the field you generated in the pre!ious step to do the interpolation ,ob. First click on the !iewport displaying the structure mesh and from the loads and boundary conditions menu do the following selections) create-pressure-3lement Uniform as shown below.

;i!e a new set name for the pressure interpolated to the structure mesh such as PressureOnStructure and select 4$ for the target element type.

Under the input data menu click on top pressure and select the -patial F3. field you generated in step :.

No%e: 0e will apply the pressure to the top surface of the shell elements. 1ress +< and select the application region and select all the elements on the upper and lower wing surface and tip rib of the wing. IMPORTANT NOTE: he element normals of the upper skin, lower skin and the tip rib must point outward. 6+ut of the wing not towards the wing ==7

1ress apply and you will see that pressure has been transferred to the structure mesh.

8- &s the last step draw the pressure contours on the structure mesh and compare both contours side by side. 2elow figure shows the pressure plot on the lower wing surface.

9- $uring the solution phase try the cases we discussed in the %>+0 + (/ 3R1+L& 3 1R3--UR3 $& &8$ers ?rne@inin adAmlarA.doc' document. Se&o#$ e%"o$: (f the first method does not work, this time erase the aero grids and elements. 1ost the default group which has all the sub-structures. &nd apply the boundary condition on the spar roots while default group is posted and make a run. (f there is problem during the solution, follow steps B4-B9 in the %>+0 + (/ 3R1+L& 3 1R3--UR3 $& &8$ers ?rne@inin adAmlarA.doc' document. -teps B4-B9 in the %>+0 + (/ 3R1+L& 3 1R3--UR3 $& &8$ers ?rne@inin adAmlarA.doc' document is for the simple plate problem but procedure is the same.
