Salem State Says

Need a Vacation? Travel to Barbados for your Spring Break!

Issue 1

Salem was only 5 miles from Beverly, so it seemed like the most logical decision for me, she said. Since then, she has moved even closer and now lives in an apartment in Salem with five of her friends. She reminisces about how easy it was to live on campus and walk to class, but being close to her family and driving a few extra minutes was worth it in the end.

New Library Excites Students

The Frederick E. Berry Library and Learning Commons opened its doors to the Salem State community on September 3, 2013. The new library is completely wireless and caters to every learning type. The library holds seating for around 1,000 students in a variety of forms. There are plenty of computers for different studying and researching needs. The Berry library is also home to classrooms for specific needs, an interlibrary loan system and a caf. Most students will be faced with a group project sometime in their college career. This is where the 12 group study rooms in the library come in handy. Each room fits from 6-8 students and can easily be reserved online. There are also group tables, and martini booths. There are still plenty of individual seats, study carrels, and lounge seats. This variety makes it a perfect place for students to feel comfortable and get their work done. The library is open to students at the University and members of the public. The amount of books the new library can hold is a great asset to everyone. There is a collection of 325,000 scholarly books, periodicals and media. There is also an electronic collection of over 300,000 books and 57,000 journals. If the library happens to not have a specific book, the circulation desk is able order the book from another library. The caf located on the lowest level of the library has extended hours for late-night study sessions. Cathy Fahey, subject librarian, was very excited about the new caf. I can now get coffee every hour that Im at work, when before I couldnt, she said. These hours will make it easier for students to get snacks and drinks while theyre studying for long periods of time. Every student that sets foot in the new library will feel the benefits that the University tried so hard to accomplish. The Salem State University geography department is hosting a trip to Barbados for spring break this year. The trip is scheduled from March 9 to March 16, 2014. The low price of $1,669 includes airfare and seven nights accommodation at the South Gap Hotel. This price also includes a daily breakfast. Not a geography student? No problem! This trip is open to all Salem State students. Students even have the option to earn three credits, but its not necessary to earn credit to attend. Some of the activities available in Barbados are snorkeling, swimming with turtles, exploring majestic caves, fish markets, museums, and visiting the beautiful white sand beaches. If travelling for course credit, you will learn about the management and sustainability of Barbados as a tourist destination. You will also learn about the issues of race, postcolonialism, and international tourism development. If travelling to Barbados and diving into the rich culture sounds like the perfect trip to you, contact the geography department today. Salem will be here when you get back, and basking in the sunshine while possibly earning three credits is the perfect combination for any college student.

A Students Journey to Salem State Finding My Way to Salem State

Published by: Salem State University 352 Lafayette Street, Salem, MA 01970 Editor-in-Chief: Shannon N. Szypko Salem State University gave me opportunities I would have never had at another school. Located just 15 miles north of Boston, Salem is the perfect location to further my knowledge. I decided to come to Salem State after studying at a State College in New York for a year and a half. I wasnt happy where I was, and I was a Massachusetts native so Ive always wanted to come back. Salem State has many things that my previous school didnt. The communications department here is better than I could have ever asked for. The knowledgeable professors not only teach us the basics of our profession, but also the lessons that cant be taught. The Public Relations profession is so specific, and the courses at Salem State touch every possible base needed to succeed.
