David Almond often casts a small spotlight on a characters favorite food. The food is never four-star cuisine, but always a humble, local staple. Rather than to romanticize food, the overarching motif serves to spark thinking about and further certain themes in his work: 1) Appreciation of the little things. In Skellig, the winged man departs, Thank you for 27 and 53. Thank you for giving me my life again (168). He lumps the delivery of Chinese food leftovers with Michael and Minas life-saving interventions aspirin for his arthritis; relocation to a safer shelter suggesting that small acts of kindness are underestimated. The characters get excited about their favorite foods and savor them, reminding us that eating them is a privilege, reminding us to appreciate them.

2) The idea of heaven on Earth. In Slogs Dad, the father exclaims heavin is a particular kind of sandwich, which naturally leads one to reflect on the fact that man often envisions heaven as an abundance of earthy things. So by extension if heaven is here on earth already, in forms such as favorite foods, is it really so implausible to think that heaven could be found on earth in other (bigger) ways like say the earthly visitation of an angelic father?
