What is Assessment?

The word assess comes from the Latin verb assidere meaning to sit with.

In assessment one is supposed to sit with the learner. This implies it is something we do with and for students and not to students (Green, 1999). Assessment in education is the process of gathering, interpreting, recording, and using information about pupils responses to an educational task. (Harlen, Gipps, Broadfoot, Nuttal,1992)

LET US THINK OF LEARNERS AS PLANTS Formative

Formative assessment of the plant is equivalent of feeding and watering the plants appropriate to their needs directly affecting their growth

ANALOGICAL COMPARISON
Summative
Summative assessment is the process of simply measuring the growth. It might be in the interest of the observer but it will not have any impact on the growth of the plant

PERFORMANCE BASED ASSESSMENT

Performance assessment is a method of teaching and learning that involves both process and product. It is not just a testing strategy

AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT
Authentic assessment involves teaching and learning in which the assessment, product, and process of student work are one and the same, and the task at hand involves significant implementation of knowledge and skills in a realworld and intellectual context, with explicit and concrete criteria for success

ESSENTIAL TERMINOLOGY FOR EVALUATING ASSESSMENT INSTRUMENTS

Reliability: Reliability refers to the stability or consistency of the assessment information whether it is typical or of a learners behavior
Validity: Validity is concerned with whether the information gathered is relevant to the decision making that needs to be made

RELIABILITY AND VALIDITY OF ASSESSMENT

Hence, validity is depends upon precision and accuracy of the evaluation

Comparison of my Learning and Previous Assessment Practices

Previous

Learning

Learning process was not informed by the information through assessment Consisted of Paper pencil tests only Meant for judgmental purpose summative in nature Were not following by particular and precise feedbacks for improvement Only tested the procedural knowledge of mathematics, not the holistic understanding

Assessment process itself is meant for improvement in learning process Assessment informs learning process and followed by decisions for improvement Assessment is cyclic process There are alternative assessment tools also which take place at every moment during the learning process Assessment should also take place in a variety of ways to make it reliable and valid
