Leadership and Organizational Behaviour Assignment 1

INTRODUCTION

An individual is in phase of learning throughout his life. However there are few things and
knowledge gained in the initial phase on which the prosperity of an individual depends.
Personality, Behaviour, Attitude and Values are the four pillars on which the character of an
individual stands upon. The learning and understanding of these things are extremely
essential in context of a manager in an organization. Even their basic understanding helps to
evaluate the people around us and also in maintaining relationships. Attitude is an
individual’s feeling toward a particular thing. Cognitive, Affective and Behaviour are the
three factors which form a positive or negative attitude. Here understanding the behavioural
part is important because it is one which affects formation of attitude of a person. Now the
personality of a person shapes his behaviour. Personality is the base of human psychological
system and it determines the way in which an individual interact. Heredity and environment
are two factors which affects a human personality. However the environment in which an
individual lives is the major factor which shapes the personality of a person. The
characteristic which are exhibited by a person more frequently is called as personality trait,
for example, shyness, aggression, etc. The determination of these traits is necessary for
recruitment, job selection and in taking career decisions. The Myer-Briggs Type indicator
MBTI and the Big Five Model are the two tools for identifying traits. Here I am using both of
these methods in analysing personality of Mr. Kishore Biyani.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Leadership and Organizational Behaviour Assignment 1

Literature is an important aspect of any study. My study was related to personality, attitude
and values. To get an insight about the topic I had to refer books, business magazines and
articles on net. All these helped to know the importance of those three aspects in an
individual’s life and also in an organization. The book Organizational behaviour by Stephan
Robbins explains about attitude, personality and values. It explains the various techniques
involved in evaluation of a personality, how they are all related and the relation to an
organization. The book A to Z of success by Y.S. Rajan explains what all things goes in
making of an successful individual. It defines these aspects in relation to individual. The most
important book which I think explain those things in practical manner is, It happened in India
by Kishore Biyani and Dipayan Baishya. The book is an autobiography of Mr. Kishore
Biyani. He explains his own life, personal experience with business and how important is
attitude, intuition, observation and proper use of sense to become an entrepreneur. The book
enables us to relate our life with his and plans required to be a successful entrepreneur. By
reading from variety of sources, I think that environment in which one grows, family
background and an individuals visualization power are some other aspect which goes into
making of an entrepreneur.

ANALYSIS AND FINDINGS

Leadership and Organizational Behaviour Assignment 1

In modern world the definition of success in business has changed a lot.

Success in business comes from the mastery in all aspect including skills, training and
motivating the teammates. These things become crystal clear from the life of ‘Retail King’ of
India, Mr. Kishore Biyani. Kishore Biyani was born on 9th August, 1961 in a typical joint
marwadi family. Since his young age, he had a rational thinking. He would question each and
everything and do it if he found some logic behind it. He was an introvert and shy person at
young age, his attitude was to challenge each and everything.

The germ of business was in his blood. He believed in the ideology “create
and destroy”. He is of the opinion that a continuous process of growth has to be there in every
business. He took risks in setting up businesses may it be arranging a disco dandiya or setting
a plant in area which had continuous labour problems and use the experience in setting up the
present Future Group empire. I have used the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator MBTI model to
analyse his personality. By applying the MBTI theory, I have found that he falls in INTP
category. He would observe people, judge them and then accordingly associate or dissociate
from them. He loves simplicity and doesn’t demand for luxury. A lot of thinking goes behind
when he takes any decisions. This shows that he is an introvert person. Even while taking
decisions, he already has all the calculations done and just expects other to execute it. He
took risk and was constantly engaged in newer business. I say that he is an intuitive person
because majority of decisions related to setting up any new business was based on his
intuition. He organized a disco dandiya when he was young, established brands like WBB
and John Miller, Started first retail store under the name Pantaloons, Established first Mega
Mart and Established Big Bazaar; he used his observation and intuition to make them a huge
success. His role model was Dhirubhai Ambani, maybe it is because of this that he took risks
and never allowed finance to become a problem. The decisions like getting into garment
manufacturing, marketing it and years later converting it into retail store needed a lot of
thinking. He thought that people will go on to buy readymade clothes and he worked on it.
He knew that creating a network is important and he had a franchisee store in every major
city. Today this has grown to such a large extent that you go to any city and you find a retail
store. He perceived the change in interest of people towards readymade textile and went on to
create Pantaloons, Mega Mart, Brands Factory, Big Bazaar and other retail store which no
doubt is today a huge success. He perceived the changes, thought how to utilize it and
implemented it. I think the main reason of his success is that he created businesses that were
customer centred. He observed the buying pattern and behaviour of consumers and
accordingly established any new business. According to him consumer is the king, the god or

in simple words consumer is the most important. He made shopping a pleasant experience.
He gave quality products and made all products available under one roof. Today the situation
is such that you name any product and it is available in any of the Future group retail stores.
He even tried his hand into film making but did not succeed. The personality of Kishore
Biyani teaches us to perceive things, work on intuition and make others believe in our dreams
to flourish in life.

PERSONAL REFLECTIVE EVALUATION

Leadership and Organizational Behaviour Assignment 1

The study of attitude, behaviour, personality and values has helped me to understand the
reasons why people behave in a particular. This study will help to understand the psychology
of every person and interact with them accordingly. This knowledge will be of use when I
work in an organization, in a team. The study makes us understand the various personality
traits and predict the behaviour of a person. We can use this knowledge to motivate our
companions and to make them work according to our plans.

CONCLUSION

Leadership and Organizational Behaviour Assignment 1

By studying the personality of Mr. Kishore Biyani and the related material on attitudes, value
and behaviour, I conclude that various factors affect the personality of an individual and a
right attitude and aspiration is needed to achieve our goals. It is all about working in team,
understanding the psychology of the team mates, motivating them and convincing them to
work with our plans. Having a positive attitude is very important and without that we cannot
move forward. Finally most important thing is that we should perceive things, work on our
intuition and follow a path which has never been explored. In other words we should
continuously work on our dream, chase it and should never stop unless we have achieved it.
