Lesson Day 1 Unit Title: Right Triangles Lesson Number: 1 out of 10 Lesson Title: Radical Review Essential Question:

What are radicals and how do we simplify them? Warm/Up - Sponge Activity: When the students walk in they will have two minutes to complete a review of square numbers. The warm up sheet will have fifteen squared numbers that they will have to write down the answer to it. For example, 22=4, 42=16 and so on. Activating Prior Knowledge (Hook): The students will already know what squaring a number means and square rooting a number means as well. They may or may not know what it means to simplify a radical. Vocabulary Development: Radical Square Square rooting Simplify Simplifying a radical Skill Lesson through direct instruction and modeling: The students will review what a radical is and how to simplify the radical. I will give them examples of simplifying radicals as well as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing radicals. This part of the lesson will take about a half hour in order to explain the steps in simplifying radicals as well as going through the many examples. I will have students come up to the board to write down what they got for their answers on some of the examples and then as a class we will go over them. Last 5 minutes: The last 20 minutes of class will be to work on the assignment on simplifying radicals. This day is just a review day so there is not a lot of structure to the lesson. Best Practices: - Build on students prior math knowledge: The students will have to review what radicals are but then we are learning how to put them into simplest form. - Offer calculators: The students can use the calculators to compare the simplified form to the original value. - Provide Practice Problems: The students will have practice problems in the notes as well as in the bookwork. - Create multiple versions of a problem: The students will see a variety of radicals and they will see different radicals that need to be added, subtracted, multiplied and divided.

Lesson Day 2 Unit Title: Right Triangles Lesson Number: 2 Lesson Title: Geometric Mean and Right Triangle Relationships Essential Question: What is the geometric mean? How do we find geometric mean? How are right triangles related? Warm/Up - Sponge Activity: Admit Slip: The students come into the classroom and they are asked, What is arithmetic mean? What do you think geometric mean is then? Use your knowledge from yesterday to relate to geometric mean. Activating Prior Knowledge (Hook): Geometric mean is used a lot in banks. One can figure out an average return when one invests in something. It is important in finance and each of you will deal with financial situations at some point in your life. Right triangles are triangles that have a 90o angle in them. Has anyone seen one of these in nature? Vocabulary Development: Geometric mean Simplified Decimal Altitude Right triangle Skill Lesson through direct instruction and modeling: I will explain what a geometric mean is and how to solve to find the geometric mean when given two numbers. I will use a lot of fractions so that the students can refresh how to multiply fractions and how to use them to find a geometric mean. Active Lesson (problem solving reasoning / critical thinking / student led): The students will be shown a picture of a right triangle. I will ask them to show me where the 90o angle is. I will explain to them what the square in the corner of a triangle is after they try to figure it out themselves. I will ask the students what they think of when they here the word altitude? They will talk about it with a partner and then we will discuss as a class that the altitude is the perpendicular height of a triangle. I will then proceed with showing them an example of one big triangle split up into two smaller triangles. Through motion, I will twist and turn to show them what the triangles look like side by side if they were split up. They will then have to try to find the relationships in the triangles using ratios. Then the students will work on the other examples given. Last 5 minutes: The last five minutes of class we will go over the examples on the notes as well as look at homework problems that the students have questions on. Best Practices: - Use friendlier numbers: I will use small integers in the triangles so that I can see whether they get the ratios right and simplified rather than seeing if they make a mistake on simplifying big numbers.

Provide practice problems: There will be multiple practice problems to work on ratios in triangles. Use visuals: I will be showing the students with my hands how the triangles are turning so the ratios are easier to see.

Lesson Day 5 Unit Title: Right Triangles Lesson Number: 5 Lesson Title: Special Right Triangles 45-45-90 and 30-60-90 Essential Question: What are special right triangles and how are the sides of a 45-45-90 triangle related? How are the sides of a 30-60-90 triangle related? How can I find perimeter using the Pythagorean Theorem and special right triangles? Warm/Up - Sponge Activity: The students will have to label a right triangle that has interior angles of 45o, 45o, and 90o using x as well as a 30-60-90 triangle. Then they will hand this in. Activating Prior Knowledge (Hook): The students will recall what they discovered in the lesson prior to this day. It was an activity about special right triangles that scaffold them to find how the sides are related on both types of triangles. Vocabulary Development: Special right triangle Perimeter Legs o Shorter o Longer Hypotenuse Equilateral Triangle Skill Lesson through direct instruction and modeling: I will tell them directly what each side value of a 45-45-90 triangle and a 30-60-90 triangle using x. In a 45-45-90 triangle, both legs are congruent, and the length of the hypotenuse is the length of a leg times 2. In a 30-60-90 triangle, the length of the hypotenuse is 2 times the length of the shorter leg, and the length of the longer leg is the length of the shorter leg times 3. I will then go through examples of each type of triangle. Active Lesson (problem solving reasoning / critical thinking / student led): Then using what they already know they must find the perimeter of squares and right triangles. They will look at the examples and find the missing sides using the Pythagorean Theorem, ratios, and special right triangles. There are problems with pictures and problems with just words so the students must draw the pictures of what they are reading and then solve the problems on their own using previous knowledge. Last 5 minutes: We will go over the examples that students did on their own but as a class and make sure to answer any questions they may have. I will also assign homework. Best Practices: - Provide Practice problems: The students will have multiple practice problems with special right triangles. - Provide timely and constructive feedback: I will ask them for the answer to the practice problems and will tell them whether they did it right or wrong. If they did it wrong then I will tell them why.

Lesson Day 6 Unit Title: Right Triangles Lesson Number: 6 Lesson Title: Quiz Day/ Homework Day Essential Question: Today is a day for the students to take a quiz and then after that they will finish their homework that has been assigned and I will also assign them a worksheet that has review problems for the last five days. Warm/Up - Sponge Activity: We will watch a five-minute video and discuss it after. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlJHJEE-QVQ Activating Prior Knowledge (Hook): The students must use all of their knowledge from the previous lessons for their quiz and homework. Vocabulary Development: Includes all of the vocabulary they have learned so far. Skill Lesson through direct instruction and modeling: They will be review what they have learned so far in this unit. Assessment: Their quiz will be summative assessment. There will technically have the whole class period to finish it but there will be a worksheet assigned and they will be told if they have missing work and should work on that during this time as well, after they are done with the quiz. This is a good day for the students to catch up as well as ask me and their peers of any questions that they have from the past five lessons. Last 5 minutes: They must have their missing homework turned into me by the end of the class or they will have to stay late or come after school. I will also tell them that the worksheet is due the next class period. Best Practices: - Use technology strategies: The video is a form of technology. - Clarify expectations (use rubrics): The students will have a rubric for their quiz to see how I graded them. - Provide time management cues: The students will be cued throughout class as to when they should be about done with their quiz and when they should finish their worksheet and start working on missing homework.

Lesson Day 7 Unit Title: Right Triangles Lesson Number: 7 Lesson Title: Trigonometry Day 1 Essential Question: Warm/Up - Sponge Activity: We will watch a video that introduces trigonometry and its vocabulary and acronyms for SOH CAH TOA. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRz2d5yedsg Activating Prior Knowledge (Hook): The students will have to recall what a right triangle is and what it looks like but the video will engage them in what the other parts of a triangle is and what trigonometry is. Vocabulary Development: Ratio Trigonometry Sine Cosine Tangent Opposite Adjacent Hypotenuse Skill Lesson through direct instruction and modeling: I will then formally introduce the definitions of the above vocabulary. We will then go over what sine, cosine, and tangent mean. The acronyms will also be reiterated but were stated in the video as well. Active Lesson (problem solving reasoning / critical thinking / student led): The students will have to use the knowledge from the video and from the direct instruction to do an example with a triangle that is a Pythagorean Triple, 3,4,5. They will only have to find the ratios of sine, cosine, and tangent. After this they will have another example right triangle that has bigger numbers on it and they must find the ratios and then simplify the ratios to their simplest form. Last 5 minutes: I will assign homework for that night of basic problems using right triangles and trigonometry. Best Practices: - Use technology: The students will be watching a video. - Provide visual and auditory directions: I will be showing them pictures of triangles as well as talking to them about how to solve them using trigonometry. - Post homework assignments in a consistent location: Their homework problems are always posted on the board and they have a homework sheet in their folder along with extras next to my desk.

Lesson Day 8 Unit Title: Right Triangles Lesson Number: 8 Lesson Title: Trigonometry Day 2 Essential Question: How can I use my calculator to find the exact value of the side? How do I find a missing angle of a right triangle when only the 90o angle is given? What are inverse sine, inverse cosine, and inverse tangent? Warm/Up - Sponge Activity: Pass the Problem Cards: The students (in pairs) will receive a card to use a trigonometry to solve for the letter asked. They get 30 seconds to solve the question and then they pass it. Once the pairs have seen four different examples the game stops. They will then look at the board to see if they found the right values. The students will ask questions on any of the examples and we can go over them as a class. They are simple problems and they arent using calculators so the questions are just looking for how to solve for it, not the exact answer. http://www.wccusd.net/cms/lib03/CA01001466/Centricity/domain/60/lessons/g eometry%20lessons/IntroToTrigFunctionsV3.pdf This activity was very good on its own so I wanted to use it as a warmup in my class. Activating Prior Knowledge (Hook): The students will have to recall what they learned about trigonometric ratios from the day before but they will also have to do it quickly, which will hopefully spark some competitiveness in them. Vocabulary Development: Inverse sine Inverse cosine Inverse tangent Skill Lesson through direct instruction and modeling: This is a continuation from day 7 but now the students will be using their calculators to find the trigonometric ratios for angle values. I will also teach them what inverse sine, inverse cosine, and inverse tangent is and how to use it one ones calculator. The students will then work on a worksheet that has real world examples of right triangles and they must use trigonometry to find the missing sides and angles. Last 5 minutes: I will ask if there are any more questions on the worksheet and the students will have to finish their worksheet for homework. Best Practices: - Use calculators - Change context to make it more familiar or appealing to students: I am connecting these examples to real world situations.

Lesson Day 9 Unit Title: Right Triangles Lesson Number: 9 Lesson Title: Angles of Elevation and Depression Essential Question: What is an angle of elevation? What is an angle of depression? Where can I find them in nature and how do I use trigonometry to find missing values? Warm/Up - Sponge Activity: Role Play: The students walk in and I will pick three students to help with the activity. I will have one student stand as a tree on the right of the classroom. I will have the other student sit down on the other side of the classroom and act like a dog. They will be holding a string to show the hypotenuse of the right triangle. I will then show the students that this line is the angle of elevation. Then I will have the other student grab a piece of sting and hold it with the tree. The other student will then go near the dog but stay standing up and act as another tree. The tree is now holding a string with the dog and another tree. I will then show the students where the angle of depression is. Activating Prior Knowledge (Hook): I feel this role-play will make them think about all of the angles of elevation and angles of depression they see everyday. It is important to connect with things the students see in everyday life. Vocabulary Development: Angle of elevation Angle of depression Skill Lesson through direct instruction and modeling: I will explain the definitions of angles of elevation and depression. Active Lesson (problem solving reasoning / critical thinking / student led): The class then has to read through the story problem and think critically about how to draw the picture of the triangle as well as what angle needs to be labeled. After the students have drawn what they think is the picture of the right triangle, I will write it on the board to make sure everyone is on the same page. I will then discuss with the students what they think should Assessment: I will give them an exit slip asking them to make a scenario of an angle of depression and then solving for the missing side. This is due before they leave and will be graded for completeness and correctness. Last 5 minutes: They will be figuring out their scenario for an angle of depression. They must draw out the scenario with animals or objects or whatever it may be as well as show their work for solving for a missing side, making sure to label each side with a value or a letter. Best Practices: - Use visuals: The warm up is a great visual. - Provide kinesthetic learning: The students will be role-playing. - Keep class discussions short and focused: While role-playing we will be figuring out what angles of elevation and angles of depression are.
