Graphs, Logic and Numbers Tutorial Sheet 6

1. Which of the following relations R on a set A are (i) reexive (ii) transitive (iii) symmetric (iv) antisymmetric? (a) A = set of all (living) females, R = is sister of (b) A = set of all lines in the plane, (c) A = N (natural numbers), (d) A = {a, b, c, d, e}, (e) A = Z (integers), R = intersects

R = have gcd equal to 1

R = {(a, b), (b, d), (e, a), (b, a), (a, e)} R = dierence is an odd number

2. Let A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7} be partitioned into the subsets {1, 3, 6}, {2, 4, 5} and {7} by the equivalence relation R. Describe the relation R (i) using ordered pairs, as in Question 1(d) (ii) using an arrow diagram. 3. Draw an arrow diagram illustrating the partial order subset of for the subsets of the set A = {a, b, c}. 4. Determine whether the relation R on the set A = {0, 1, 2, . . . , 15} given by xRy if and only if the binary representation of x has fewer 1s than the binary representation of y is (i) a partial order (ii) a total order.

The questions above are for discussion in your tutorial the week after the break. John Stillwell 3/4/98 1
