ABOUT THE COVER

It is always difficult creating a spring cover in
January, and our photo shoot this January, with
its very cold temperatures, was challenging. Brandi
Nellis captured this magical portrait of Eloise
DeJoria at the DeJoria Ranch, Valle de Paz, in
Hayes County. Read more about Eloise on page 14.

HE STARSthat night were big and bright at the

Nobelity Projects Annual Feed the Peace Awards
Dinner this past Feb. 9 at the Four Seasons Austin
but perhaps none bigger and brighter than Austins own Eloise
DeJoria.
Though you may not know Eloise DeJoria by name, you may
recognize her from such movies and TV shows as Weekend at
Bernies, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and Friday Night
Lights, or as the face of Paul Mitchell hair care products.
But to the countless people whose lives shes touched, Eloise
DeJoria is a dedicated philanthropist and volunteer, deeply
committed to helping her community in Texas and beyond. It
was this Eloise DeJoria and her husband John Paul DeJoria
who, together, received the Nobelity Projects 2014 Ann
Richards Founders Award.
A special evening that funds Nobelity Project film and education initiatives throughout the US and abroadincluding,
but not limited to, re-forestation, clean water, literacy, education and the artsEloise DeJoria and her husband received the
Ann Richards Award for their personal commitment to a better
world. Through their tireless work, the DeJorias have impacted

Valle de Paz sits on approximately 100-acres of magnificent ranch land on the banks of Fitzhugh Creek
in Hayes County. It is home to 17 species of exotic animals, including Dama gazelle, Arabian oryx,
Blackbuck antelope, Pere David deer and multiple species of geese, to name but a few. Here Eloise
contemplates the magical scene of animals grazing or running freely over acres of open land.

literally millions of lives (in addition to saving countless others

from a bad hair day).
Born and raised in Texas, Eloise DeJoria made her film debut
in Songwriter, starring Willie Nelson. Willie Nelson was also a
past Nobelity Project honoree, and the Feed the Peace Award was
subsequently renamed The Willie, in his honor. The 2014 recipient of The Willie is rock musician and activist Ben Harper.
Following Songwriter, Eloise DeJoria appeared in many feature films and television series, most recently Angels Sing, a 2013
Christmas family drama film adaptation of Nobelity Project cofounder Turk Pipkins 1999 novel When Angels Sing, directed by
Tim McCanlies. Eloise DeJoria has also been featured on 20/20
with Barbara Walters, in E Entertainment, as well as in various
magazines but, perhaps most visibly, she has served as spokesmodel for Paul Mitchell TV and print ads.
Of course, shes also an adoring, hands-on mother and grandmother (though you wouldnt think it to look at her!) with a deep
interest in fitness and the outdoors.
And yet, somehow Eloise DeJoria manages to squeeze a wealth
of charitable work into her over-stuffed schedule. Organizations
she supports include such diverse programs as Austin Childrens
Shelter, the Austin Recovery Center, Help Clifford Help Kids, the
Palmer Drug Abuse Program, Helping Hands, Club 100, Long
Center for the Performing Arts, the Austin Film Society, Food 4
Africa and Amnesty International. Her pet project: the Arbor
Recovery Center in Georgetown, Texas where, partnering with
one of her sons, Eloise supports novel approaches to addiction
therapy.
Congratulations, DeJoriaslet your approach to charity serve
as an example for everyone. We cant all be movie stars, but we
can be stars in our community.

featured in this issue to join the million dollar club, with
Storybook proceeds of $1.3 million that will support the
outstanding care provided to sick and injured children in a 46-county
area by the Dell Childrens Medical Center of Central Texas. The escalators leading to the grand ballroom on the third floor of the Austin
Convention Center provided a dramatic way to make a regal entrance for
the thousand plus guests who attended the Storybook Gala on the evening of January 25. The first order of business was to attend the Royal
Reception, underwritten by H-E-B! The shine of silk and sequins was
dazzling, but no one looked more like a Storybook princess than Co-chair
Laura Craddock, wearing a stunning cocktail dress by Daniel Esquivel,
who donated a Sarah dress and custom fitting to the Silent Auction.
Following the Storybook theme, guests heard testimonials from
patients and parents of patients of the stories of their life-altering care at
Dell Childrens. Videos of the tales they recounted were projected at various intervals on the walls. Every story gave confirmation to the incredible

pool of skill and talent that make up the Dell Childrens medical community.
One familys story was especially gripping. Roopal Bhatt was walking with her
two young children when a driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into
them. The children, Devan and Sapra, were starflighted to Dell Childrens while
Roopal was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. The children were seriously
injured but especially their daughter Sapra, whose systems began to crash. A
Dell team of surgeons and other specialists worked furiously over Sapra and, in
the end, they were able to stabilize her. It was a storybook ending
to every parents worst nightmare. Kunjan and Roopal Bhatt and
Devan and Sapra took to the stage, where Kunjan expressed his
thanks to Dell for saving his children.

Our goal was to raise $600,000 for ACS but the evening far surpassed
all of our dreams.
The emotional pivot of the night came when 20 year-old Crystal
Hemphill spoke to the audience about the sexual abuse she endured
as a child, her life in foster care and how Austin Childrens Shelter
changed her life.
When auctioneer Heath Hale asked attendees to make a gift to the
Shelter, more than 160 guests raised their paddles to make significant
gifts. But it was the $100,000 gift from Stacy and David Keliehor that
brought a standing ovation from the ballroom. Two additional major
gifts came from the auction, when Brian Sheth purchased a case of 2000
Bordeaux for $70,000 and John Paterson purchased a one-of-a-kind
Yamaha VMAX motorcycle from Jay Lenos personal collection and
signed by Leno for $50,000. The bike was donated by Milton Verret,
who purchased it at an auction supporting another childrens charity.

Child Abuse:
Why Does It Happen?
STORY BY KELLY WHITE,
CEO, AUSTIN CHILDRENS SHELTER

HAT TIRED,stressed parent hasnt at some point

acknowledged a gut understanding of how child abuse might
happen? We turn to our own mothers, friends or extended
support networks and say we need a night out, a full nights sleep, or a
moment alone. The luckiest among us are able to rely on the positive
parenting techniques we learned from the way we were parented. But not
all of us have been so lucky.
Traditionally, we have focused the responsibility for childrearing primarily on parents, believing that what happens in the home should stay
in the homethat the community has no business interfering. However,
we have learned through extensive evaluation that parenting is one of the
toughest jobs there is, and that raising children does not occur in isolation
from the community in which one lives.
Perhaps the most important way to prevent child abuse is to build supportive communities. We know that the fewer supports available for parents
in a community, the more likely it is that child abuse and neglect will occur.
And, when children are abused the lifelong impact on the person and
costs to our society are enormous. They are more likely to experience
life-long problems such as: teen pregnancy, substance abuse, domestic
violence, poor academic achievement, poverty, mental health problems,
obesity, homelessness, and chronic physical health problems. These additional problems combined with the patterns of parenting they have learned,
increase the likelihood that abuse/neglect, and the attendant fallout, will be
passed along to the next generation- and the vicious cycle continues.

28 Waterways | Spring 2014

If we want to end child abuse/neglect we must work together to build

proactive prevention systems that support all parents, and help children
to grow and thrive. We must develop policies at every level that support parents and children. Funding must be provided for services such
as parenting classes, support groups, mental health counseling, domestic violence prevention/intervention, stress management seminars, and
home visitation programs. We must create neighborhoods, churches and
schools that provide accurate information about parenting, and allow
parents to rely on peers for support. We must work together to provide
affordable, high quality childcare so our children enter school ready to
learn. And, we must have businesses with family-friendly policies such as
flexible work schedules, paid maternity/paternity leave, and paid family
sick leave.
Texas currently ranks 50th in the amount of proactive support provided
to children and families and as a result we pay substantial economic and
social costs on the back end. Texas taxpayers spend more than $6 billion
dollars annually to respond to the more than 65,000 children that are confirmed victims of child abuse and neglect. As a community, we can no longer afford the costs of turning a blind eye to children and families, waiting
until problems escalate before we intervene. We must embrace our children
and families so that we can bolster our states workforce, productivity and
development. We must collectively prevent the debilitating child abuse and
neglect that are impacting each of us by financially and emotionally investing in our futureour children.

HE CENTERfor Child Protection is yet another

nonprofit who joins the million dollar club, raising
over that amount at its highly anticipated Dancing
with the Stars Austin held at the Hilton Austin on December
8th. As it has since the inception of Dancing with the Stars in
2007 as the major fundraiser for the Center for Child Protection,
Lexus of Austin has proudly assumed the role of Presenting
Sponsor. The Roberts family established Lexus of Austin and
in 2000 co-founded the Center for Child Protection. In addition to presenting the event, Lexus of Austin also contributes a
Lexus to the Luxury Car Raffle. This year it was a 2013 Lexus
ES 300 Hybrid! Lexus of Austins owner Vicki Howard has carried on the family tradition. And the pages of the program were
full of other important sponsors whose generosity made it possible to surpass the million dollar mark.
The celebrity dancers pack the house with friends and family, hoping to win the audience vote and hold high the glitter

provides top entertainment. Sabrina Barker-Truscott has directed the
production of Dancing with the Stars since the original event debuted in
2007 and, as emcee, she always bring high energy and a fabulous sense of
humor to her role.
But it may just be the performance of the judges that gets my vote.
Ed Clements, Talk Show Host for KLBJ-AM, has been a DWTS judge for
many years, and he was joined this year by community leader Dan Bullock
and actor and producer Barbara Chisolm. They do their homework! If
they dont already know the celebrities (Ed Clements always claims all the
good-looking women are his ex-wives!), they do their research, and the
celebrity roasting is hilarious. Barbara Chisolms comment to winner Will
Hardeman was pointed, I dont like men who are prettier than I am! I
think she still gave him a 10how could she resist!
This years winners were: Will Hardeman with pro partner Klair Van
Slyke; 1st runner up Katie Jaffe with pro Matt Stewart; 2nd runner up
Jamie Barshop with pro Rowdy Dufrene.
It was an all-star show to benefit this nationally accredited childrens
advocacy center, Austins Center for Child Protection.

packed with guests who turned out to support the men and women who protect and serve
the Lakeway community.

up his audience with a hilarious elementary school story that best not be repeated here.
Police Chief Todd Radford spoke of the important benevolent role the Foundation plays.

BUSINESS PROFILES BY WENDI AARONS

AURELIUS SOFIA, MORTGAGE BANKER

CHASE FLOORING

According to Aurelius Sofia, every prospective homebuyer and real estate

investor needs an advocate. As a Senior Mortgage Banker who has served
the greater Lake Travis area for almost eight years, Mr. Sofia feels confident
that the mortgage solutions he provides his clients are among the best in the
business. They rely on me to bring knowledge and expertise to the table to
be able to identify the best programs and products for their specific needs.
As a concierge lender, Mr.
Aurelius, Trey, Ginger
and Greyson Sofia Sofia is educated in a variety of
mainstream loan programs. These
include but are not limited to conventional/conforming and non-conforming loan programs, government
loans, interim construction, 1x close
construction and lot loan programs.
His company, Starkey Mortgage,
also offers specialized niche products like Pledged Asset and crosscollateralized loan programs to
accommodate the high net worth
and self-employed borrower.
Aurelius takes great satisfaction
in finding the perfect loan scenario
for his clients, whether hes working
with first time homebuyers or the more experienced real estate investor. I
make a conscious effort to get to know my customers, he says. I consider
them my friends, my neighbors and members of my community.
Mortgage banking is actually a second career for Aurelius. He spent
28-years in the Marketing and Advertising business working for a number
of Fortune 100 media companies. His last position, as Director of National
Sales with Clear Channel Radio in Miami, Florida, came to an unexpected
end after his family endured five hurricanes in three years. His wife, Ginger,
a Texas A&M graduate who was born and reared in Marble Falls, told him,
Im ready to move back to Texas! Aurelius, Ginger and their two sons
Trey and Greyson eventually relocated to Lakeway and have been happy
residents of the bubble ever since. Aurelius is a graduate of the University
of Mississippi and a scholarship athlete.
Ginger, a Realtor and luxury marketing specialist with Realty Austin,
suggested Aurelius apply his background in sales and finance to the mortgage business. He feels that this background, combined with his passion
for helpingpeople, is what has contributed to his successful career as a personal banker. He takes pride in the fact that he earns 100% of his customers from referrals and knows he is appreciated by his clients for taking the
heavy lifting out of the loan process.
Aurelius Sofia not only brings passion to his position as a trusted advisor but also to his life in Texas. Hey, I grew up in the D.C. area he says.
But as soon as I moved here, my Texas wife bought me a pair of boots and
said welcome to Texas. I guess that makes me a Texan now, doesnt it? Yes,
Aurelius, it sure does.

Chase Flooring Group has been an Austin institution for over 21 years, and
now they bring their expertise to a new location in Bee Cave. Founder and
owner Marc G. Chase recently opened their fourth showroom at 12702
Highway 71, in a landmark building that is also home to Town & Country
Leather. We thought it would be a great idea to have furniture and flooring intertwined, says Marc of the concept of combining these two appealing
businesses that now make their home in one of Bee Caves historic buildings.
And we even have a full-service bar for customers to enjoy while they shop.
What sets Chase Flooring Group apart from the other sellers of tile,
stone, wood and carpet is simple: they bring builder pricing to the public.
Their showrooms boast only the best manufacturers and the best products,
all sorted by levels. The flooring selections are displayed from Levels 1-10,
so a customer is able to easily determine the price of a project without getting overwhelmed. There are no hidden costs. Additionally, their trained
staff knows not only the best values for customers but can also recommend
the latest and greatest styles. They make the search for new flooring efficient and easy and offer prices that are the same or lower than those found
at big box stores.
Chase is committed to a full-service experience. Professional, uniformed at-home installers and a fleet of Chase Flooring trucks provide the
perfect antidote to the nightmares often associated with
the Do-It-Yourself approach.
They guide each project from
start to finish without any
muss or fuss. It should also be
noted that all of Chases products and work are warrantied.
We take care of any and all
problems, Marc states. The
buck stops at Chase, whether
it relates to labor or materials.
Our longevity in Austin gives
us credibility.

FRESH DERMATOLOGY

HILL COUNTRY APOTHECARY

When Dr. Candace Thrash opened her practice in Lakeway this past
November, she named it Fresh Dermatology for a few reasons. I want to
create a happy, supportive work environment for my staff and build a business that is sensitive to our environment, involved in our community and,
above all, conducts itself with integrity, she says. Additionally, I want to
help people be the best version of themselves and look fresh, not fake or
frozen. Whether it is maintaining healthy skin or a youthful appearance,
looking fresh is about being the best version of yourself at any age.
Dr. Thrash has lived in the Lakeway area for the past five years and
practiced elsewhere in Austin before founding Fresh. She operated her
own practice in Chicago after completing her internship at Northwestern
University and her residency at the world-famous Cook County Hospital. A
graduate of The University of Texas, she earned her medical degree at The
University of Texas Health Sciences Center, San Antonio.
Fresh Dermatology has the
expertise to assist patients with
whatever dermatological needs
they may have, be they medical or
cosmetic or both. Dr. Thrash strives
to make her practice very comprehensive. In fact, patients are often
able to address both medical and
cosmetic concerns at the same visit.
Personalized attention is the foundation of every encounter. Every
face is different, and everyones
personal priorities are different,
she says. I dont believe in cookie
Dr. Candace Thrash
cutter medicine.
On the medical side, Dr. Thrash
and her professional staff are able to diagnose and attend to any dermatological issues presented, including common problems like acne, eczema,
psoriasis and rosacea. She advises full-body skin exams at least once a year
for adults and provides a variety of in-office treatments such as liquid nitrogen, photodynamic therapy, skin biopsies, and minor surgeries.
Fresh Dermatology also offers cutting-edge cosmetic solutions, like
Clear+Brilliant laser treatments that leave the skin looking younger and
more refreshed with a downtime of just 12 to 24 hours. It also offers fillers like Juvaderm and Belotero, as well as skin smoothers like Botox
and Dsyport. IPL treatments, commonly referred to as photofacials
are available, as are a wide variety of chemical peels that are stronger than
those performed at a spa. Perhaps most notable about the cosmetic services
at Fresh Dermatology is the fact that they are all performed and monitored
by Dr. Thrash herself. The practice also carries highly effective skin care
products, including well-respected names like Jan Marini Skin Research,
Neocutis and SkinCeuticals.
Fresh Dermatology is accepting new patients and takes most insurance
plans. Give them a call and see how they can freshen up your outlook!

A LOT TO DIGEST
MAKING SENSE OF THE AMERICAN DIET
STORY BY GEOFF KIRSCH

T USED TObe easy: four food groups arranged in a nice, neat pyramid. As long as you had 6-11 servings of breads & cereals, 5-9 servings of fruits & veggies, 4-6 servings of meat, nuts and dairy and ate
fats, oils & sweets sparingly, you considered your diet healthy. An apple a
day was all it took to ward off hospital visits. But that was before the emergence of a profusion of medical celebrities, each offering different nutritional recommendations.
These days, keeping the doctor away might entail eating like a Greek
islander (the Mediterranean diet), a Buddhist (the Ayurvedic diet), a
cave man (the Paleo diet) or an Austin hipster (shopping exclusively at
Whole Foods). How are modern Americans to make sense of all this? Before
undertaking any projectand your familys nutrition, especially with your
busy schedule, is a huge projectlets understand the terms.
What does diet mean? Diet simply refers to a persons total food and
drink consumption. Diets can be affected by religious beliefs, medical needs,
weight control or, simply, personal habit. Just because it is billed a diet
doesnt mean it is good for you. Indeed, many so-called diets actually pose
significant health risks.

40 Waterways | Spring 2014

Belief-based diets come from spiritual beliefs and religious tradition, for instance the Kosher diet, followed by Orthodox Jews or the Islamic
halal dietary code.
A vegetarian diet excludes meat in favor of fruits, vegetables,
grains and nuts. Lacto-ovo vegetarians consume dairy and eggs, and
pescetarians eat fish, while strict veganism shuns all animal products.
While vegetarians tend to have lower incidences of heart disease, diabetes
and certain cancers (prostate, breast, bowel), some fall into a common trap,
becoming French fry vegetarianssubsisting on meat-free convenience
food. Even balanced vegetarian diets can still lead to vitamin deficiencies,
particularly B12.
Weight control diets range from low-calorie diets (1000-2000 calories a day) to very low-calorie diets (fewer than 800 calories a day) to zerocalorie diets. Seriously, theres a practice known as breatharianism,
based on the belief that humans dont need food to survive (several adherents have died of starvation). Low-carbohydrate diets (e.g. Atkins, South
Beach) limit carbohydrate intake (e.g. bread, pastas) as opposed to calories,
often replacing them with protein and fats (e.g. meat, eggs). While low-carb
diets may be more effective at initial weight loss, long-term results dont differ from low-calorie diets.
Diets involving extreme, rapid changes are considered crash
diets. These promise quick weight loss by eating only one
type of food like grapefruit, cabbage soup or submarine
sandwiches. It should go without saying this can be very
dangerous, but millions of people go on
and off them every day. Just ask Jared.
Detox diets (e.g. juice fasts and Master
Cleanse) attempt to flush toxic substances from the body and also fall into
the crash diet category and are often
beloved by individuals with serious
food issues.
Lastly, diets may be followed for
medical reasons, such as intolerance or allergy, or prescribed by
medical professionals, for example
a low-glycemic diet for diabetes sufferers or a glutenfree diet for celiac disease.
While certain medical diets
become popular fad diets, consult your doctor before you go
on oneor any diet, really.
And remember, there
are only two pieces of
dietary advice every expert
agrees on: eat your vegetables
and exercise.

DR. DANIELLE GRANT opened Beansprout Pediatrics in September of

2010, and its well-earned reputation in the community led to rapid growth.
The expansion of staff and patients led to relocation to 13917 TX-71, the
former Urgent Care building by the Field Of Dreams on Hwy 71 W near
Hamilton Pool Road. The spacious new office has more exam rooms and
larger separate well and sick areas and maintains a vibrant color scheme and
dcor, catering to patients of all ages from newborns to adolescents.
Beansprout Pediatrics offers complimentary prenatal visits, routine
newborn care, well child care, camp and sport physicals, comprehensive
diagnosis and treatment of a variety of illnesses, ADHD consultation and
management, minor wound care, allergy management and many other services. Hours have been expanded from 8am-6pm Monday through Thursday
and 8am4pm on Fridays. A daily walk-in clinic for acute sick visits of low
complexity is now available.
Beansprout Pediatrics is excited to welcome Dr. Brian Temple. Dr.
Temple attended residency with Dr. Grant at Baylor Texas Childrens
Hospital in Houston and is board certified in pediatrics. He has been in private practice in Oregon for 5 years and has relocated with his wife and three
children to the Hill Country area to be closer to family. He enjoys travel
medicine and often dedicates time to disaster relief, helping underserved
populations around the globe.
Jesse Zaitchik, male pediatric nurse practitioner with a focus on adolescent and sports medicine, joined the practice in February of 2011. He
has been a welcome addition to the team. All three providers are accepting
patients currently.

WHO DOESNT LOVE A good skin care product? If youve ever been
treated to a facial youll surely remember how great your skin felt after.
Women often purchase their foundation from the department store simply
for the gift with purchase. Everyone is looking for hope in a bottle, but what
is the hallmark of a great skincare product?
Believe it or not, it isnt price. While the counters of Neiman Marcus
are filled with $300 lotions and potions in shiny packages, the pretty box
doesnt make them worth the price. Fresh Dermatology carries shelves full
of products which have won awards from New Beauty, Allure, and InStyle
Magazine for $200 or less. Even the drugstore carries a few good products in
the $10-20 price range, you just have to know what to look for.
Its also not celebrity endorsement. From Adam Levine to Cindy Crawford,
famous people love to give skincare advice. Paid endorsements drive up the
price of a product but mean little in terms of results. You wouldnt come to
a dermatologist for advice about your music career, so why would you take
medical advice from a musician?
The hallmark of a great skin care product is scientific proof. A good
product will come backed by scientific evidence that it is safe, effective,
and convenient to use. At Fresh Dermatology, products from around the
globe have been hand selected by a board-certified dermatologist because
they have shown proven benefits in clinical trials. Come in to Fresh
Dermatology and let the staff help you find a scientifically proven product
you cant wait to use.

WHY SHOULD YOUR CHILD see a Pediatric Dentist? Pediatric Dentistry

is one of the nine recognized dental specialties of the American Dental
Association. Pediatric dentists complete two to three years of additional specialized training (after the required four years of dental school and four years
of undergraduate education) to prepare them for treating a wide variety of
childrens dental problems. They are also trained and qualified to care for
patients with medical, physical or mental disabilities. Pediatric dentists are
qualified to provide oral conscious sedation. In addition, many are on staff at
hospitals to provide care under general anesthesia.
Taking your child to a pediatric dentist every six months is similar
to taking your child to a pediatrician for a well child exam. The American
Academy of Pediatric Dentistry in partnership with the American Academy
of Pediatrics recommends that the dental home be established by your childs
first birthday. These early visits will provide education on proper oral health
care at home. In addition, these visits can provide guidance of what to expect
as your childs dentition develops. Moreover, early intervention with preventive measures can stop the severity of many developmental problems, making treatment times shorter with better outcomes in the future.
Hill Country Pediatric Dentistry, P.A. is a dental home for your child
with offices located in Bee Cave and Marble Falls. The Owners and Pediatric
Dentists, Dr. Steve Hernandez and Dr. Angie Hernandez live, work and play
in the Lake Travis area. HCPD is an active sponsor of the LTYA. In addition,
HCPD sponsors many community events from health expos to school carnivals and school supply drives. Come in and see us soon!

DIGITAL DENTISTRY
IS BASED RIGHT HERE
IN BEE CAVE.
STORY BY CATHIE PARSSINEN
PHOTOS BY BRANDI NELLIS AND SMILE DESIGNS

One of the leaders of the industry is Dr. Todd Ehrlich. Dr. Ehrlich has
been on the forefront of digital dentistry for 15 years and is a consultant
for the biggest and most innovative companies in dentistry. His passion
for high-tech dentistry has given him the opportunity to lecture across the
U.S. and internationally. He completes live patient demonstrations at the
annual American Dental Association meeting where thousands of dentists
discover the attributes of digital dentistry. As in any industry, dentistry
benefits by going digital. Dr. Ehrlich explains:
Patients want the best technology, and I believe digital dentistry is the
way to go. We no longer need impressions or two visits to complete our
crowns and veneers. We simply scan the teeth into a computer, design the
restorations in a computer program, and then mill them. It is simple, fast,
and extremely accurate. The best thing is that the patient does NOT have
to come back. No temporary! Done! My favorite cases are our one-day
makeovers: veneers in a day!

Digital dentistry also includes techniques for diagnosing: X-rays. Digital x-rays have
come a long way and most dentists are using them, but what makes Dr. Ehrlich stand
apart is that he utilizes three-dimensional x-rays much like a CT scanner. This allows him
to digitally plan dental implants and diagnose tooth problems that are very difficult to see
on traditional x-ray views. He is one of the few general dentists in the US to even have
this capability.
Dr. Ehrlich and his wife Kristine opened their practice in Bee Cave in 2000 when there
was not a lot of activity out here. He explains,I remember driving through the area and
thinking that this would be a great place to live. The day I saw the ground break for the
HEB in Bee Cave, I knew the area was going to explode, and it did! I am glad to call the
area my home and help my neighbors with the highest technology in dentistry.

Radiant Faces
LAKEWAY RESIDENT Amy DeMaio is the owner of Radiant Faces, a premier skin care company that specializes in fat reduction and skin tightening
using a revolutionary new device called EXILIS ELITE. Taking skin tightening to the next level, EXILIS ELITEs treatments are pain free and noninvasive. With a new 90 Watt facial tightening applicator, the device provides
nearly twice the power of the previous EXILIS hand piece and has powerful new software that contributes greatly to its superior safety profile. The
more powerful EXILIS ELITE uses an energy system called Collagen Refill
Technology (CRT) that disrupts collagen fibers, dissociating the collagen
structure and causing the production of new collagen fibers. It is this new
collagen that gives patient the smooth texture, elastic quality and beautiful
radiance of youthful skin. Radiant Faces is one of only two practices that offer
treatments with the EXILIS ELITE.
Approximately 25 million people suffer venous reflux disease, the underlying cause for most varicose veins. In fact, venous reflux disease is two times
more prevalent than coronary heart disease and five times more prevalent
that peripheral artery disease. Few people are aware that morbidity and mortality associated with venous disease is quite high and early diagnosis and
management is critical. So in addition to being unsightly, varicose veins may
present a real threat to health.
The Vein Clinic at Star State Heart and Vascular offers minimally invasive
treatment options, including targeted endovenous therapy, for patients with
venous reflux disease that have significantly improved patient outcomes. Dr.
Samuel DeMaio, M.D., FACC and Dr. Pritam Polkampally, M.D. are both
interventional cardiologists specializing in coronary, peripheral arterial and
venous disease.

When Does Elite Not Mean Elite? The difference between EXILIS

Both vehicles take you places. The difference is in how quickly and
safely and comfortably you get to your destination. EXILIS ELITE is
a completely different machine with powerful new software that allows
the device to read the type of tissue that is being treated and to make
appropriate adjustments to energy flow instantly, which creates more
uniform results in less time. If you are looking for ELITE RESULTS
dont settle for anything less than the ELITE TREATMENTS offered

VEINSOLUTIONS AUSTIN BRINGS together a group of experienced

and specialized board-certified cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons dedicated to using the latest technologies in the diagnosis and treatment of varicose and spider veins.
VeinSolutions is a division of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeons
(CTVS) Austins leading surgical group that has been serving Austin and
Central Texas for more than 50 years.
The concept is simple: they want you to look as good as you feel. They
are experts at combining the precise aesthetics and medicine together in the
comprehensive care of cosmetic and therapeutic vein problems.
They have created a warm, comfortable environment with a professional
staff who is ready to answer all your questions.
Emery W. Dilling, M.D., a board-certified and fellowship-trained cardiothoracic surgeon, says the discomfort that often accompanies varicose veins
comes from elevated pressure inside the veins, and if left untreated, the discomfort can become severe and lifestyle-altering.
Jeffrey M. Apple, M.D., FACS, board-certified and fellowship-trained
vascular surgeon, encourages primary physicians to refer patients with
symptomatic varicose veins as soon as the patient presents with pain. These
patients, he explains, receive maximum benefit both medically and financially when they are sent immediately to a practice that specializes in treating
venous disease.
VeinSolutions contracts with all major insurance carriers (including
Medicare) resulting in smaller out-of-pocket expenses for patients and eliminating the need to pay out-of-network costs.

Summer
(Camp) Lovin
STORY BY TARJA PARSSINEN

F YOU HAVE A KID,you may have noticed that summers

are different than when we grew up. Gone are the endless
stretches of time you spent driving your mom totally insane,
and sheer boredom drove you into trouble. Today, kids and parents are blessed with summer camps: beacons of enrichment, fun,
socialization! Does your kid love soccer? Dancing? Nature? There is
a summer camp for every passion. What? Your four-year-old hasnt
discovered his passion yet? Theres a summer camp for that too.
I enrolled my now 5-year-old son in his first summer camp
at age 3- at our local childrens museum for a couple of weeks,
and hes gone there every summer since. Last summer, he did Bug
Camp and On-the-Bay, tromping through the ecosystem and getting very, very dirty. This year, hes thinking about Shipwrecks &
Treasure Hunts and Imaginary Worlds. This might all be replaced
by competitive sports camps in the future, but who knows? Point
is, hes getting a heck of a lot more stimulation, education and fun
out of these few weeks than he would get from coming with me on
yet another errand.
I remember when I was in college, my younger sister and I
decided to create and direct our own summer camp. We both had
strong literary and performing arts backgrounds, and for two weeks
every summer, we ran a theater camp for approximately 20 children. Divided into two groupsthe big kids and the little kidswe
rehearsed the plays, created costumes and built sets in the morning, while the afternoons were filled with swimming and games.
At the end of camp, the kids staged a grand production for family
and friends. It was a tremendous amount of fun and a lesson in the
amazing ability of small children to take on complicated tasks, like
memorizing entire plays and mastering foreign accents.

Shops at the Galleria in Bee Cave | Open 7 days a week

For the older children, my sister and I adapted books and movies for the
stage, including Roald Dahls books James and the Giant Peach and The
Witches, the comedic movie The Three Amigos, and perhaps most critically
acclaimed (by proud parents), the British TV show that John Cleese made
famous, Fawlty Towers. You aint seen nothing until youve seen an 11-yearboy (namely your brother), impersonate John Cleese as a crazy English hotel
owner. For the younger children, we turned to books like Tikki Tikki Tembo
and Madeline in London, and they were adorable as they took their cues from
their older classmates, finding the courage to walk onstage.
Im not exaggerating when I say that those children, some as young as 4,
learned self-confidence, responsibility, public speaking, the ability to master
stage fright, and the thrill of captivating an audience by the power of their
words. Those two-week camps were magical, not only for the children but also
for my sister and me.
Choosing the right summer camp for your child can seem daunting, especially today when there are so many options. Sometimes it feels easier to
choose whats safeor what everyone else is signing up for. Looking back at our
theater camp, I have to applaud the parents who took a risk on us and decided
to forego another cheerleading camp for their daughters and another Longhorn
basketball camp for their sons. Now that Im choosing summer camps for my
own kids, I have to remember that growth comes from new life experiences
and that it might even be time to branch out from the childrens museum and try
something different.

IVER PLACECountry Club was the site of the third annual Birdies for Bikes Junior
Charity Golf Tournament, a tournament for young golfers ranging in age from six
through seventeen. The November tournament drew junior golfers from San Antonio,
Round Rock, Pflugerville, Bee Cave and Marble Falls. The Birdies for Bikes tournament works
in conjunction with the Mix 94.7 Bikes for Kids charity. In its short three year history, Birdies
for Bikes has raised more than $22,000 to help purchase bicycles, helmets and bike locks as
Christmas or Hanukkah gifts for underprivileged children of Central Texas.
The young Birdies for Bikes golfers solicited donations and pledges from family, friends and
neighbors for the birdies and pars that they made during tournament play. This year the tournament raised $10,759.
Tournament founder Hailey Derrickson collected donations from local businesses. Hole
sponsors who supported the tournament with cash donations included Financial Solutions (Life
Insurance, Retirement and Estate Planning), Field Photography, Jill Briley of Private Label
Realty, NFP (Benefits, Insurance and Wealth Management), Paula Kaisner of CruiseOne Dream
Vacations and several individual families. Many businesses donated prizes for the golfers who
collected the most money, for closest-to-the-pin competitions and for raffle drawings. Strait
Music donated a guitar that was later autographed by The Plain White Tees! Many thanks to
the following community-oriented businesses that helped the young golfers help other kids less
fortunate than themselves:
Alamo Drafthouse, Austin Park, Biejo Bags, Big Frog Custom T-Shirts, Brighton Collectibles
(Lakeline Mall), Chilis Restaurant, Cinemark Theatres, Crowned Chick Designs, Cups and
Cones, Flores Restaurant, Lake Travis Zipline Adventures, Main Event, Menchies, Moviehouse
& Eatery, Oasis Restaurant, Papa Murphys, P. Terrys, Round Rock Express, San Antonio Spurs,
Subway Restaurants of Four Points and Lakeway, Target of Four Points, Texas Junior Golf Tour,
Texas Stars hockey, The League Kitchen & Tavern, Top Golf, Volente Beach Waterpark and
Zacks American Bistro.

running live music performance program on television. ACL recently
moved to a new home in the Moody Theater in the sleek heart of downtown Austin. And so it
seemed very fitting that Moreland Properties, with its own long history in Austin, would choose this
venue as the place to host a client appreciation party for its own celebritiesits clients.
The invitation list included guests from all over the world, a testament to Morelands global
reach and to the cosmopolitan appeal of living in Austin, Texas! Some guests drove in from the Lake

F THERESone thing Texas is known forwell, okay, aside from cowboy

hats, chili and longhorn hood ornamentsits team spirit. And that special
mix of heart and passion filled the air this past November as Texans young
and old rallied to take on lung cancer at the Seventh Annual Lone Star Huddle
Up. A night of friends, family, barbecue and music hosted by Rexannas Foundation for
Fighting Lung Cancer, this years Huddle Up featured the Lake Travis Fiddlers, country
star Curtis Grimes and the theme Shoot for the Moon. Proceeds benefited University
of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Centers new Moon Shots Program, an unprecedented,
comprehensive cancer prevention, early detection and treatment initiative. Each Moon
Shot entails a rigorous, multidisciplinary effort to dramatically cut mortality rates of
specific cancersin this case, lung cancerby 2020. Like the 1969 Apollo space mission
it was named for, MD Andersons lung cancer Moon Shot comes with a hefty price tag.
While lung cancer currently claims more lives than breast, prostate, colon, liver,
melanoma and kidney cancers combined, it remains one of the most under-funded
and under-researched cancers. Enter Rexannas Foundation, named after Rexanna
Hawkins, lifelong educator, coach and mentornot to mention non-smokerwho,
in 2006, lost her battle with lung cancer less than two months after diagnosis. Since
then, Rexannas Foundation has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the MD
Anderson Cancer Center earmarked specifically for lung cancer treatment, prevention
and research. At this years Huddle Up, Rexannas Foundation Executive Director Lisa
Spain spurred attendees to dig deep, reaching the goal of $250,000all to beat lung
cancer. Go team!

AKEWAY celebrated its 50th anniversary in November at the

Lakeway Resort and Spas Vista Ballroom. It was fitting that the celebration would be held there, as the Lakeway Resort and Spa and
the City of Lakeway share the same year of birth in 1963, so for both of them,
2013 marked golden anniversaries. The gala party included cocktails, dinner
and dancing to the music of The Fabs. Dotties Follies gave a glittering performance, and there were spectacular golden

STORY BY TARJA PARSSINEN
PHOTOS COMPLIMENTS OF THE RITZ-CARLTON
AND CATHIE PARSSINEN

WOULD LIKEto preface everything by stating that the members of

my family are not what you would call snow people. I guiltily confess to
opening my REI membership solely for the discount on a jogging stroller. What can I say? My family is more comfortable at sea level, and Ive always
looked better without a neck gaiter.
But this year, we thought Lets ascend to 7,000 feet! After all, the baby
is older now, and my mom would come with us, representing the possibility
of free time and maybe even a dinner alone! We thought, We can do this!
Although in hindsight, it was more like, Can we do this? Either way, we
ascended! Christmas carols in the CD player, snacks clenched in little hands!
And big hands.
Ever the pessimist, even I had to admit that the weather was glorious, and
the hotel even more so. The Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe is located at North Star,
a mere gondola ride away from a lively village with restaurants, shops and a

beautiful ice rink surrounded by fire pits andwait for itcrepe

stands! I could already taste the Nutella. The beauty of the Ritz is that
its ski-in-ski-out, so we scheduled my 5-year-old son for his first ski
lesson. After all, somebody should do something in the snow. My son
could ski and I could apres-ski in the sumptuous lounge of the Ritz,
gazing out the floor-to-ceiling windows on the mountain, a fire crackling in the giant stone fire place. My son loved it, and the instructor
informed me, You have a little speed demon on your hands here. I
felt a pang of sympathy for Bode Millers mother.
As for entertaining my 2-year-old son, he was content to play in
the snow, ride the gondola, and shake the presents under the lobby
Christmas tree. The Ritz, bless them, is very tolerant of kids. They
offer a host of activities for the younger set, including my personal
favorite: smores every afternoon by the fire pit. And when the apresski and the chocolate and the thought of hoisting on the long underwear again just gets to be too much, theres always the spa.
I booked an appointment for my mother and myself in advance,
and the Ritz didnt disappoint. I had the Organic Scalp and Full-Body
Massage that boasts a warm shea-butter infusion massaged all over
to induce a state of deep relaxation. Mission accomplished! But I cant be sure if it was
the massage or the 80 minutes without my kids. My mother had the Signature Organic
Massage and was virtually passed out in the lounge where we met afterwards.
By the end of our brief foray into the mountains, I think we all learned some valuable
lessons. That taking children on a winter vacation can be fun! And that the level of fun
can sometimes be connected to how hard you apres-ski. Or at least how hard you spa.
And although I cant speak for my mother, her lesson probably has something to do with
children and germs and hand-sanitizers.
