LAB 7.06 Step 1: DHCP automatically assigns IP addresses to computers when connected to a network.

For this to work the computer must be configured to use DHCP. When a computer configured as such connects to a network it sends out a discovery packet on the broadcast address to find DHCP servers, which return an offer and IP address. Step 2: My home router is set to use DHCP already. Step 3:

Step 4: I do not have access to a Linux operating system. Step 5:

Step 6:

Step 7: Step 8:

Step 9: The source address if 0.0.0.0. Destination address is in fact 255.255.255.255. Broadcast was used to find the DHCP server. My system requested the IP 192.168.1.122, which is the IP this computer has used since the initial setup of my home network. The system requests a familiar IP.

Step 10: The offer came from 192.168.1.1. The IP address that was first requested (192.168.1.122) was the IP address that was offered back. If offers details such as license time, MAC info, Server host name, etc. Step 11: The name of the third frame, request, is inappropriate as the third frame is actually the client telling the DHCP server that it accepts the IP information offered in the previous frame. Step 12: Wireshark shows the DHCP server sending the ACK directly to the DHCP client and not over the broadcast address, but for the sake of this question, the lease is not activated until the ACK is received, so the IP address assigned would not be used by the client yet. Step 13: The prompt responds with the phrase No operation can be performed while it has its media disconnected. Step 14: This could be an error with a previously licensed IP address that has expired but is still trying to be used by the client or server. Forcing a release and renew may solve the problem. Watching the steps in Wireshark can tell you exactly where the error is occurring.
