    Name of the symbol:Keys (Klidouchos) History of the Symbol: In Hekate Soteria, Sarah I.

    Johnston states that the key was a symbol for Hekate from at least Hellenistic times onwards. The keys She held were for opening Hades and the bars of Cerberus. (1). The Orphic Hymn to Hekate names Her as key-bearer because of her role as guardian against evil and of boundaries.(2)

    Meaning of the symbol: Hekate used the keys to open Hades. Or to keep them closed. Johnston also sites other works where Hekate is listed as the goddess who opened the gates of the Underworld. Hekate is also known as the liminal guide, sometimes refusing the passage between life and death. thus using the keys to open or close the door.
