Symbolism- Religion

You may remember that Gail, Davids mother- is a devoted Lutheran. At page 114, Julian and Enid come to Wes home after hearing of the allegations, where they are arguing- and David is listening through the house duct system. I crouched down by the register.... and laid my ear against the gate At this point, REMEMBER, David is on the top floor, Enid, Julian, Wes and Gail are on ground floor (centre) and Frank is in the basement.

David Heaven- above the struggle (looking down)

Julian, Enid, Wes + Gail Earth- A place of struggle

Frank Hell- For the condemned.

In religion, you have 3 levels- Heaven (For the good/innocent), Earth (For life/struggle) and Hell (For the bad/guilty/condemned)

Once the youngest son realised what he had done, he came back to his father (Homecoming from war) and asked forgiveness. The brother who had worked so hard was jealous of his fathers (Possible motivation of Wes locking up brother) love of the son who worked for nothing yet he was welcomed back. The oldest said to his father, I have worked hard, never rebelled, I don't understand the welcoming back of my brother. His father taught his oldest son that it was as if his youngest son had been
