Week 4: Day 5 Movie Completion and Discussion Unit: Brave New World (Dystopian Novel Grade Level: ENG4U

U Study) Time Frame: 75 minutes Curricular Expectations: Reading and Literature Studies - Reading for meaning 1.3, 1.5, 1.6, 1.8 Writing Developing and Organizing Content 1.1, 1.2, Applying knowledge and convention 3.2 Oral Communication Reflecting on Skills and Strategies 4.1 SWBAT: Students will be critically analyzing the movie vs their interpretation of the novel via discussion within groups. Knowledge and Understanding: Students will be showing their knowledge of the novel by critiquing discrepancies between the movie and novel. Application: Students will be applying their knowledge as they jot down notes during the film showing. Preparing for Class: Have the Brave New World move ready to view 4 images that will distinguish the smaller class groups for discussion (Futuristic building representative of the Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre, test tubes, visual representation of the class system of humans from Brave New World, infant). If groups are visibly uneven, the teacher will move students from large group to smaller one. - Write on the board that groups must: 1. Elect a scribe that will record group member names, length of time each discussion lasts for, and star the questions that evoke the most discussion. *Collect/write down only the questions that generated the most discussion. 2. Elect a person to time discussion. Timer must stop discussion at 5 minutes and move to next. 3. Elect a person that will make sure each member of the group participates in discussion. *Everyone watched the movie, everyone should have an opinion. 4. Each person must discuss at least two of their questions with group. 5. The lined paper filled out (with the above information) will be handed in at the end of class. Materials for Class: projector and screen, movie (Brave New World), handouts, pencils, entrance cards, dry erase marker or piece of chalk + board. Hook/Introduction: (5 minutes) Students will be given entrance cards where they have to answer the following question(s): List the discussion question you had prepared for todays discussion. What would be your brief answer to each? Lesson: 1. (15 minutes) Complete the movie. 2. (2 minutes) Students will move to stand beside the image that they like the most. 3. (50 minutes) Students will discuss, in their groups, each question that they had created. They must follow the directions outlined on the board. Bridge: This lesson will bridge into our next which will be looking at dystopian short stories.
