Critical

thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action, stated by Michael Scriven & Richard Paul (.

Why

must we learn to think critically???

To solve complex problems To understand the logical connections between ideas To identify, construct, and evaluate arguments To detect inconsistencies and common mistakes in reasoning To solve problems systematically To identify the relevance and importance of ideas To reflect on the justification of one's own beliefs and values

The most fundamental reason for teaching critical thinking is that good thinking skills are essential for making appropriate decisions about what to believe and do, whether for personal decisions, or civic decisions, such as voting or serving in a jury. Personal decisions, decisions within our vocational pursuits (at whatever level) and decisions we make as citizens of a democracy require critical thinking in order to be the best possible. Critical thinking is needed for wise personal decisions, useful vocational decisions, and decisions about how to be part of the society.

One must be rational One must be active In order to be a CRITICAL THINKER One must be selfaware One must be openminded One must be negotiable One must be effective

Critical thinking is quite compatible with thinking "out-ofthe-box", challenging consensus and pursuing less popular approaches.

If anything, critical thinking is an essential part of creativity, because we need critical thinking to evaluate and improve our creative ideas.

Critical

thinking requires effective communication. Critical thinking is thinking outside the box. In order to think outside the box, one must be imaginative and creative.

Benjamin Bloom, in 1956, categorized and classified thousands of teachers questions into a taxonomy. He expressed the thought that the higher up the taxonomy one moved with the type of questions being asked and answered, the deeper the learning: The lowest level was knowledge (recall of information) Comprehension was next (understanding meaning) Application followed (apply what has been learnt) Analysis, was next (to separate material or concepts into components) Synthesis, followed (create new meaning or structure) Finally, evaluation (to make informed judgments)

In 2001, Anderson revised Blooms method of critical thinking

Anderson,

adapted Blooms idea, replacing the wording, such as knowledge was replaced with remembering. While the higher order levels of evaluation and synthesis were inverted, so that evaluating was seen as the second highest, and creating (synthesis) was reflected as the highest order of thinking.

This is a very popular method of critical thinking

However,

in my revised version of the critical thinking process:

The critical thinking process starts out with knowledge. The next step is comprehension. Once you understand your thoughts, you have to be able to apply your thoughts. Next, you must explore and organize your ideas or thoughts. The last step involves evaluating or fixing your final idea.

Good

job overall Ms. Brown. There were a few technical issues (no video), and the formatting of references were good, but you didnt use the most recent publication; I think you no longer have to list month, date and year retrieved in the reference section. Click on the little comment icons.
