I.

COURSE TITLE: Strategies in Health Education

II. OBJECTIVE: After 15 minutes of lecture-discussion with


demonstration the level II students will be able to
acquire comprehensive knowledge in infant cord care.

Specifically the students will be able to:

1) Define what is umbilical cord and cord care.


2) Identify materials/equipment needed for cord
care.
3) Enumerate the procedure on how to perform
cord care.
4) Appreciate the importance of cord care.

III. CONTENT:

BRIEF BACKGROUND:

The umbilical cord provides nourishment to the unborn child throughout


the duration of pregnancy; this is where all the nutrients pass to nourish the
unborn child.

CARE OF THE UMBILICAL CORD

Equipment/Materials needed:

Cord clamp (optional)


70% Isopropyl alcohol
Cotton Balls or cotton balls soaked in 70% isopropyl alcohol
Clean gloves or forceps
Waste Receptacle

Procedure: (Steps to follow)

1) Inform the parents or primary caregiver of the child.

2) Gather the equipment/materials needed.

3) Wash hands and wear the clean gloves.

4) Place the baby in bed on supine position.

5) Open the diaper of the baby and check the cord.

6) Start cleaning from the base (from center going outward in circular
motion). Use 3 cotton balls.

7) Then to the stump of the cord. Divide it in 3 parts. Start cleaning from the
base going upward. Use 3 cotton balls.

8) After cleaning the shaft. Proceed to the cord clump. Start cleaning at the
center of the clamp where the tip of the cord can be seen by using one (1)
cotton ball soaked in alcohol, then proceed to the side of the clamp by
using one (1) cotton ball soaked in alcohol for every side. (note: this will be
perform if the cord clamp is till present).

9) Discard all the cotton balls used in the waste receptacle.

10) Do the necessary aftercare.

11) Wash hands and document the procedure.
