Pre World War Two

In 1919 the US with other allied

powers invaded Russia and assisted anti-Communist forces during the Civil War. Russian delegates were not invited to attend the Versailles conference. Russia was not admitted to the League of Nations. During the 1930s Russia was seen as a bandit nation, one which was not to be trusted. If you wanna hang out call schoonover

World War Two

In August of 1939 the USSR

established a Non-Aggression Pact with Nazi Germany and helped the Nazis invade and defeat Poland. The USSR also took other territory by force before being attacked by Germany in June of 1941. The US and the USSR join forces only after they are both attacked by Axis powers. At Yalta and Potsdam major disagreements are evident between the US and USSR. After the war ended the most urgent need for the

alliance was gone. The USSR felt a need for security and established satellite states in Eastern Europe. The US wanted free trade throughout the world. This too the USSR saw as merely an attempt by the US to dominate world markets. The Marshall Plan and the Truman Doctrine caused anxiety for the USSR.

The Berlin Crisis, the Russian testing of a nuclear

device in 1949 and the fall of China to communist forces greatly intensified US fears. As nations emerged from or struggled to throw off colonial rule, both the US and the USSR sought to direct their move towards independence in a manner compatible with their own ideology and interests. The Cold War was partially a result of an inability by both the US and the USSR to perceive one anothers fears and aspirations. This was especially true after Stalins death in 1953.
