Feed back to the student

Excellent reflection. I would add another aspect of supervising students teachers....it is an opportunity to pay it forward. We all had student teacher supervisors and hopefully one day these new teachers will be able to pay it forward as well. Exp. Briefly describe this field-based internship experience, including your specific role (1/2 page). Last year I had the privilege of working with two student teachers in my classroom. My role turned out to be quite a responsibility but was one of the most rewarding experiences I have had as a teacher. As a cooperating teacher I became part of small group of people responsible for shaping and educating a soon to be college graduate whose future career was about to begin. At the end of it all I had to help decide if I felt this person should be allowed to teach. Student teaching is the last opportunity for a college student to prove they have what it takes in the most authentic experience they would have yet. I would serve as a guide to model, evaluate, and help improve or fine-tune their skills as a teacher. This experience is a great test of my knowledge of curriculum and instruction along with effective delivery. I had to demonstrate my ability first while the student teacher observed, and then monitor and evaluate each of the student teacher?s as they taught. This requires effective communication and sometimes involves having unpleasant, but necessary, conversations with student teachers. For the most part my experience with both student teachers was a very pleasant experience. Reflect on what you have learned from this experience, from mentor discussions, and how you will use this learning in future administrative leadership roles (no more than 1/2 page). Being responsible for a student teacher is one of the few opportunities we have as teachers to have a direct impact on another adult who will also go on to teach. I see this as a test of my skills to instruct and lead others in quality instructional practice. Effective communication, setting clear expectations, and modeling are very important aspects of this role. As an administrator I will take on this role in a much larger capacity where I will be responsible for evaluating and improving all of my teachers. I will certainly be applying much of what I learned in my evaluator approval course. I also found that working with these student teachers and their field experience coordinators gave me great satisfaction and it got me start pondering my own possible career as a possible field experience coordinator ? maybe just a thought for now. The special education hours are very important as a lot of time is spent helping the student teacher to provide accommodations and learning how the differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners. I added elementary hours to this reflection because the lessons I have learned and skills I have developed through this experience will transfer to working with teachers at all levels ? especially when it comes to evaluations. My work with a student teacher is not just focused on subject content, or management of high school students, but helping to make somebody the best at what they do; after all, good teaching is good teaching!
