Shigeru Umebayashi

Sound Designer

Shigeru Umebayashi, born in Japan. Was originally in a band named EX, when they broke up he began to score films instead. Though he has over forty credits to his name he is most famous for his talents in 'House of Flying Daggers' (Zhang, 2004) and 'In the mood for Love' (Wong, 2000).

His music echoes the cinematography that is included within the films, such as 'The House of Flying Daggers' is elegant with stunning and beautiful visuals. His melodic creations have a certain peacefulness about them and the instruments used can give off different atmospheres when working with film, such as disastrous or mellowing moments. Also, he has been able to capture the essence of particular cultures and eras, for example, 60s Hong Kong (In the mood for Love) and China 859 CE (House of Flying Daggers).
